Geek This Week:

Aaron: Picked up the MacHeist nano bundle 2 this morning for $19. This is a pre-cursor to the main event: MacHeist 4, which is supposed to come out later this year. This bundle sells for $19 and gives you 7 applications. They added three more programs you get just for tweeting that you made your purchase and then this morning an 8th program was added: Tweetie 2 beta.

The MacHeist bundle has always featured good programs at an incredible price and a portion goes to charity. The main bundle later this year is sure to be awesome but for now, head on over to macheist.com to score your programs!

Gozer: Lunar PSP. Cool begining, four heros in the past, that the game makes references to, starts off fighting this evil creature and some foreshadowing of who the main villan of Lunar is.

Tech and Gaming News:

Valve confirms Steam for Mac, debuts in April
By Donald Melanson posted Mar 8th 2010 2:44PM

Eager gamers have no doubt already seen the teasers, but Valve has now finally confirmed that its Steam game distribution service and Source engine will at long last be headed to the Mac. According to Valve, the company’s current line-up of games (including the Half-Life and Left 4 Dead series) will be available to Mac users in April, while Portal 2 will represent the company’s first simultaneous release for PC and Mac later this year. Better still, Steamworks for Mac also boasts a new feature called “Steam Play,” which will let you buy a game once and, for instance, start playing it on a PC at work and then pick up where you left off on your Mac at home (we’ll give you a moment to let that sink in). Game publishers will have to enable that feature themselves, but Valve says it expects most to take advantage of it.

TiVo Premiere and Premiere XL usher in a brand new interface, optional QWERTY remote
By Nilay Patel posted Mar 2nd 2010 6:53PM

Over three years after the original Series3 launched, TiVo’s back with Series4 — say hello to the new TiVo Premiere and Premiere XL, which will arrive in early April. The new slimmer hardware is nice, but the big news is the totally revamped HD interface built on Flash — yes, Flash — with all kinds of new options for discovering content from recorded, on-air, and internet sources. The new UI is only for the Series4, and TiVo’s pitching the Premiere line as a single-box solution for getting content on your TV, so although there’s long been support for services like Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand, it’s now being pushed to the front — content will show up in searches and be exposed on the main screen. There are also new partnerships with Pandora and FrameChannel, both of which will also come to Series3 boxes. And yes: there’s finally a capacity meter. We could kiss the ground.

Both models will do up to 1080p output and have single multistream CableCARD slots and eSATA jacks for storage expansion; the $299 Premiere will do 45 hours of HD recording on the 320GB internal drive, while the $499 XL will do 150 on 1TB and adds in THX certification. The bad news? There’s still no support for tru2way, so you still won’t have access to your cable company’s video on demand service — although one of the screenshots has a Comcast logo on it, so we’re intrigued.

There’s also a new optional Bluetooth slider QWERTY remote, which will ship later this year for an undisclosed price — we played with a hush-hush prototype at CES and we can say that it’ll be a must-buy for Premiere owners. We’re actually a little miffed that it’s not packed in the box as the standard remote — all that searching almost demands it. Same with the new Wireless N Adapter, which will be $90 and go on sale with the Premiere; it should at least be included with the Premiere XL. We’re okay with the omission of the new optional phone line adapter, though, it’ll be $30 and only sold online. Press release after the break, a full set of pics in the galleries, and PDF spec sheets at the read links.

Xbox Live Now Allows Sexual, Racial Identifiers
Policy update comes with “increased stringency and enforcement” to prevent abuse.By Steve Watts, 03/05/2010 at 09:02

Microsoft announced an update to their Xbox Live Code of Conduct today, which will allow users to “more freely express their race, nationality, religion and sexual orientation” in Gamertags and online profiles. “Under our previous policy, some of these expressions of self identification were not allowed in Gamertags or profiles to prevent the use of these terms as insults or slurs,” wrote XBL general manager Marc Whitten. “However we have since heard feedback from our customers that while the spirit of this approach was genuine, it inadvertently excluded a part of our Xbox Live community.”

Microsoft has been fielding criticism about the policy, particularly in regards to gay and lesbian Xbox users who have felt that they couldn’t express themselves. The story hit last year of a lesbian being suspended due to her name. Later in the year, the launch of The Ballad of Gay Tony brought the issue up again, making users wonder why a word was banned if it was in a game title.

Of course, the spirit of the policy was to prevent abuse, and Microsoft promises that hasn’t changed. Whitten says that Xbox Live will be policing for people abusing the terms more than ever, and promises “increased stringency and enforcement to prevent the misuse of these terms.” In other words, if you’re legitimately gay and want to express it on Xbox Live, go for it. If you want to use it as a pejorative, this isn’t free license to do so.

Feedback:

Fairly new listener. Going to keep listening. It’s awesome that you guys are doing this.

Btw too bad that the US couldn’t pull it out in OT. And living in CT, it’s great to hear a tech podcast out of the north east. My assertion that apple outside of the ipod and iphone platform is a big fail stands – OSX is locked to the small market share, and the only people who get to experience it are the 5%ers, which is a shame – as I said, I have a mac in my office, next to a linux and a windows box, and the mac is great, i love using my wife’s macbook pro, its terrific. And i wish i could install it legitmitely on my water cooled I7 sli, ssd raid machine. But I can’t and as long as OSX remains for the priveladged few – well Apple better keep churning out iPods, iPhones – I reserve judgement on the iPad, because in the pc world – they barely register.

On a different note i bought my parents a blue ray player with netflix streaming (150 bucks), and gave them a 1 year subscription to netflix, and they love it. They rent BD movies, and watch streaming movies. And they said that after 1 year is up they will renew. Better than my dad getting in trouble for torrenting. He is over 60, but he knows enough to be dangerous.

Had a fairly geeky birthday. Watched Star Trek for the second time and then after coming home from dinner, we watched Back to the Future Part 3. BTTF was my wife’s idea because we were talking about time travel due to Trek. My wife is quite the stickler for time travel and hates when writers don’t think of all angels such as in Journeyman and Lost. Back to the Future is time travel done right and I couldn’t agree more.

Gozer:

Playin PSP!: Soulcalibur and Lunar Silver Star Harmony

Played some more Bioshock 2, eh.

Finished Mass Effect 2. Suicide mission that may or may not be. Depending on what happens in the suicide mission is directly related to the choices you make in the game. I had two NOOOOOOOOO!! moments in the end. Tried to go back to do the end again and it didn’t work. Overall, an amazing game. Game of the year 2010.

Feedback:

Apple fanboys are dillusional that their little platform matters in the big picture. I work for a brokerage firm, as a senior programmer and our statistics on users are about 5% osx about 8% linux/unix, the rest is various flavors of windows. Our software is written in java, and even though you may think its a big fail, java is thriving in the financial sector because it does deliver on the cross compatibility promise. And with computers getting so fast, the virtual machine aspect of java fades away into the background. So in the environment
where our customers are financially savy well off investors, they choose windows, who is still choosing apple? And why should Microsoft put the resources in to develop Mac compatability for zune or for the Windows Phone?

It is not half the market like you said, it barely registers on a pie chart. Sorry, but MS has been languishing for at least 5 years basically doing nothing, and Apple has not gained any appreciable market share in the pc market. Outside of the iPhone and the iPod, i would have to call Apple a big fail. Really if they didn’t have the mobile platform, only the fanboys would care. The big push from the fanboys should be to open the sale of the OS. I guarantee you that if you could install OS X freely on any pc, it would have a 30% market share within a year. Then, they would matter – for now they are a consumer electronics company whose main business is iPhone, iPod and they dabble in pcs..

Oh and i have a mac on my desk and love it, even though the keyboard and mouse stink.

Aaron:

Not too much geeking out for me this week. I’ve been watching mostly the Olympics and enjoyed the USA win over Canada in Men’s Hockey. One cool thing is that Nissan is heavily advertising the Leaf, which we featured on our show just two episodes ago!

Drop7: still a time-suck.

Gozer:

My new favorite podcast! Talkradar, it’s a gaming podcast that discusses new games and retro stuff as well. The thing that really hooked me is that whenever they discuss a game, they play the music and/or sound effects from that game.

http://ocremix.org/ This is a website devoted to video game music remixes. They have a little something from almost every game console.

Mass Effect 2 – I have all recruited, except the robot, and have completed every loyalty mission. Now i am just exploring the galaxy searching planets and trying to find anomalies. The anomalies, when discovered, turn into little bite sized missions.
I am a renegade, so i don’t take crap from anyone. Example, there was this women reporter being a bit nosy, so when my renegade option came up i hit the right trigger and it made Shepard punch her in the face!!

I am also tryina get with Jack, who is a female biotic. She’s crazy but is opening up to me. I did get an opportunity to have some meaningless @*# with her but told her i wanted to get to know her better. I figure since i am playing the bad guy this game she would be a good character to try to get with.

Last but not least, i am extremely excited about someone i am going to meet very soon.

Got rolled into the new Facebook layout. Interesting, though I feel like I’m missing a lot of updates from people. Every time I refresh, I get new posts that weren’t there a minute ago, and to answer your question: Yes I have my news feed set to ‘latest posts’.

Still rocking Drop7.

Gozer:

Bioshock 2. Just rented it today. Not too impressed so far. First games opening blew me away. You play as a big daddy now. Sophia Lamb and Big Sisters are now the enemy. Starts off before the fall of raptur then fast fowards 10 years after the first game. Dual Weilding and multiplayer.

Mass effect 2. About 12 hours in. Still have like 4 recruits left to get just got Jack ( girl) and Zaeed. Zaeed is from this cerberus card that came with the game, also a short mission reflecting on ME1. Recruiting Jack and negotiating with her. Making her a promise to have full access to info archives but bluffing.

Exploring the universe and different star systems and scanning planets ( which can get boring) but neccesary for creating new weapons, armor and ship enhancements.

I found a new obsessive game for my iPhone: Drop7. This game from Area Code Inc (http://www.areacodeinc.com/drop7/) is a tetris-like game that combines a drop aspect with numbers. You have to clear out columns and survive as long as possible. The bottom line: it’s addicting as all hell. It’s officially taken over as my time-suck, pulling that title away from iValet.

Also LOVING BetterTouchTool for my Apple Magic Mouse. This AWESOME utility (found at http://blog.boastr.net/) allows not just for expansion of the usable gestures but it also allows you to create custom gestures with a huge array of options. The best thing of all is that you can have program-specific gestures. For example, if I three-finger click while in Safari, I get a new tab with Google.com loaded. It’s incredibly awesome and makes my mouse a thousand-times more useful. I will admit though that the gesture I wanted and use the most is the Apple-included two-finger swipe to navigate forward and back in Safari.

Gozer:

Star Wars one man show.

Mass Effect 2. Yes i bought it. Couldn’t really get into the first game but figured i would give this one a shot. I am definitely sucked in at this point. You play a commander Shepard, customize your character. Basically there are these reapers that are destroying human colonies throughout the galaxy and you have to investigate what is going on. This is an awesome sci-fi / roleplaying / action game. Role playing aspect i took a jack bauer approach. The action is similar to gears, great cover system. Squad based mechanics are awesome.

Three words: Austrian Death Machine

Totally wanna make another music video for “Get to the Choppa” with video from Predator.

Goin to see the one man shhhta wars show this weekend with shhhta wars dan, toots and chad. $15 not really expecting much but it is just an excuse to dress up and wield a lightsaber.

Still playin God of War 2, just killed icarus and took his wings. Can’t get past the part where i have to get the scholar to read something in this other language.

Playin some Bayonetta. Nice to see the SEGA logo come up as the game starts up. Basically you are an umbra witch who fights angels. After killing these angels, they drop halos which are very reminiscent of the sonic rings. This game is insane, at first i couldn’t tell what was going on, like devil may cry on crack. Got used to the controls and i actually like the controls better than devil may cry. And she also summons a demon made of hair.

And…converting alot of old analog vhs to digital which we will get to later.

Tech and Gaming News:

AT&T Insiders Report iPhone Exclusivity Going Away On Wednesday
Saturday, January 23, 2010 – by Shawn Oliver

It’s sort of hard to believe that all the hype from CES is already over and done with. Larger companies spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to introduce and showcase new products at the show, and now all anyone wants to talk about in the tech world is Apple. Must be nice to be Steve Jobs (or an investor). The company that gave the world the iPod and iPhone is planning a media event on the 27th of this month, and while the world tends to believe a tablet or slate of some sort is planned, there has been no definite proof of that to this point.

We really have no idea what’s next from Apple; we just know that it’ll be something to unleash one’s creative side according to a tagline in the invite. According to an inside source close to the going-ons involved in all of this, a new tablet of some sort may not be the only thing on deck for next Wednesday though. We have been led to believe by an inside source that AT&T will lose their iPhone exclusivity on the same day, though it’s not yet clear what other carrier (or carriers) will be stepping in to also carry the phone. For anyone who has followed the saga, you may notice that you haven’t seen AT&T fighting to extend their original exclusive agreement of late. In fact, they have spent most of their time fighting Verizon’s negative ad campaign.

This may not be all that surprising. Inside of AT&T, we are hearing that the iPhone is causing more trouble than ever before. On some level, having the iPhone is hurting AT&T’s image. Because they are the only company to carry it, and it’s such a data hog, it’s largely to blame for AT&T’s network troubles. We don’t remember hearing about AT&T’s “horrible network” before the iPhone–do you? The iPhone itself doesn’t really handle the switch from 3G to EDGE very well, so calls that are in-progress tend to fail whenever the 3G bands aren’t optimal and the phone attempts to step down to EDGE. It seems that AT&T is tired of taking the heat for this, and at this point, they may be smart to just let another carrier take some of those customers who are most inclined to complain.

We also heard that when AT&T loses their grip on the iPhone, they’ll be introducing a bunch of other new smartphones with new platforms in order to “compensate.” At CES, it was announced that new Windows Mobile, Android and webOS-based phones were destined to land on AT&T, but few details were provided as to when. Now, it seems the puzzle pieces are beginning to slot together. It’s possible that AT&T recently went searching for deals with other phone makers in order to proactively bolster its smartphone lineup for when this day-of-doom would come. AT&T has gained a huge amount of subscribers from being the only operator with the iPhone, and if it loses that advantage, it’ll need some other cutting-edge, high-brow phones to keep people’s attention.

One big happy family soon?

It’s hard to say what’ll happen if a carrier like Verizon gets the iPhone. Will existing iPhone users on AT&T run in droves to switch, regardless of the early termination fee? Will existing AT&T iPhone users stick with their plan? Maybe Apple will simply see a new influx of iPhone users, as customers who were always wary of AT&T finally make the jump now that the phone is a on a network with better perceived quality? We still have to take all of this as rumor for now, but we have very good reason to believe that we’ll see AT&T quietly (or perhaps not so quietly) lose its grip on the iPhone come Wednesday. What happens after that is anyone’s guess, but we would expect the overall iPhone market share in the US to surge quite significantly if it’s made available on a CDMA carrier.

Google Voice Arrives on iPhone With HTML5-Powered Web App

The robust web application can be accessed by visiting m.google.com/voice on your mobile device and works with phones running iPhone 3.0 software and above and Palm Web OS. Google has put the power of HTML5 to work to finally bring a rich Google Voice web app to the iPhone (and Palm Web OS).

The new HTML5 web app includes a few extra bonuses like a sleek design for your Google Voice inbox, the option to create homescreen icons for individual pages and the ability to display your Google Voice number as the outbound caller ID so you can easily receive return calls. You can also send and receive text messages for free.

Unfortunately Google Voice is still invite-only, which means that iPhone and Palm Web OS users who haven’t received a Google Voice invite are still out of luck.

Google’s decision to use HTML5 to circumvent Apple’s app store approval process while still powering a rich application experience on the iPhone demonstrates the flexibility of HTML5 in mobile web browsers, and also highlights a growing trend in iPhone application development.

‘Tremendous Interest’ in a Mass Effect Movie, says BioWare

No plans currently, but project director Casey Hudson says they’re looking at their options.

Could a Mass Effect film adaptation be in BioWare’s stars? Evidently yes: Although they’re currently not pursuing any offer, project director Casey Hudson says their intergalactic RPG series is attracting a lot of Hollywood attention.

“Obviously we have a tremendous amount of interest from people in Hollywood to make a major motion picture about Mass Effect,” he recently told MTV (via VG247). “The most important thing for us is, we don’t just want to see a movie get made. We want to see a great movie get made, if it’s going to get done at all.”

So for now that means no film adaptation is in the works, but that may change going forward. “We’re just looking at our options there, but waiting to make sure we have something really right before we do it,” Hudson explained.

How To: Customize your iTunes Equalizer on a Per-Song Basis

iTunes and iPod software allow you to control the equalization or “EQ” of a song.
iTunes equalizer presets

iPod’s equalizer has the same equalizer presets as iTunes (except Loudness). This allows a high level of integration between iPod and iTunes.

After you encode or “rip” a song using iTunes, you can assign that song one of 22 equalizer presets. Once you assign a preset to a song, iTunes will use it each time you play the song. When you copy the song from your computer to iPod, the equalizer preset you chose in iTunes is also copied, and iPod will play the song with the same preset. For example, if you assign a song the “Rock” preset in iTunes, iPod will play that song with the “Rock” preset and iPod will play the song with the same preset as long as the EQ on the iPod is not set to off.

If you don’t assign a preset to a song, iTunes and iPod simply play the song as it was encoded, unless you turn on the general equalizer, which applies to all songs being played. In this case, though, that equalizer preset is not saved with each song.
iPod’s equalizer settings offer a wide range of options, which are explained in the next section.
iPod EQ settings

EQ – Off
iPod does not use the equalizer. Songs play as they were encoded.
Songs that have been assigned an equalizer preset in iTunes do not play with that setting.

EQ – Flat
Songs without an equalizer preset assigned to them in iTunes play as they were encoded (same as EQ – Off).
Songs that have been assigned an equalizer preset in iTunes play with that setting.

EQ – (other)
Songs without an equalizer preset assigned to them in iTunes play using the EQ setting selected on iPod.
Songs that have been assigned an equalizer preset in iTunes play with that setting, not the one selected on iPod. You can temporarily play a song using one of iPod’s other EQ settings as follows:
Play the song on iPod.
While the song is playing, press the Menu button until you have navigated to the main screen.
Select Settings.
Select EQ.
Select a particular EQ setting you want to try.
The song will play to the end with the new EQ setting. The next time the song is played, it will play with the EQ setting assigned to it in iTunes.
Notes

iPod does not use custom equalizer settings made in iTunes.
You can’t create custom equalizer settings on iPod, or transfer custom settings to iPod.
Turn EQ off if you don’t use it. Equalizer is a feature that uses your iPod battery more quickly. If you don’t use EQ, your iPod will play tunes longer. Adding EQs to playback uses more of your iPod processor, since they aren’t encoded in the song. If, however, you’ve added EQ to tracks in iTunes, you’ll need to set EQ to “flat? in order to have the effect of “off,? because iPod keeps your iTunes settings intact.

Got some great gifts for the holidays but decided to head out with the wife to pick up some items Santa didn’t drop off. I picked up an Apple Magic Mouse and also a Backpack shelf from Twelve South. The Magic Mouse is nice so far, though I’ve only used it for a few hours (I took it out of the box today). The Backpack shelf is a really handy shelf that attaches to the L mount on the back of my iMac, allowing for storage that is completely hidden. This let me take two external drives and place them out of sight. I took the opportunity to re-organize my desk and neaten it up. I didn’t regain much space but my desk is now much nicer looking and less crammed.

Oh yeah, you need to see Avatar.

Gozer:

Xbox red ringed! My wife allowed me to buy an arcade unit. When i get the second fixed one back it will go in the living room to play ( if i dont wanna put hours on my lamp) and to use the awesome zune marketplace. Watched a movie in full 1080p, looked great, downloaded it to the hard drive. An 11 gig movie took about 3 – 4 hours to download. There is an option to stream it too but i havent tried that.
