Geek This Week:

Aaron:

I found a new obsessive game for my iPhone: Drop7. This game from Area Code Inc (http://www.areacodeinc.com/drop7/) is a tetris-like game that combines a drop aspect with numbers. You have to clear out columns and survive as long as possible. The bottom line: it’s addicting as all hell. It’s officially taken over as my time-suck, pulling that title away from iValet.

Also LOVING BetterTouchTool for my Apple Magic Mouse. This AWESOME utility (found at http://blog.boastr.net/) allows not just for expansion of the usable gestures but it also allows you to create custom gestures with a huge array of options. The best thing of all is that you can have program-specific gestures. For example, if I three-finger click while in Safari, I get a new tab with Google.com loaded. It’s incredibly awesome and makes my mouse a thousand-times more useful. I will admit though that the gesture I wanted and use the most is the Apple-included two-finger swipe to navigate forward and back in Safari.

Gozer:

Star Wars one man show.

Mass Effect 2. Yes i bought it. Couldn’t really get into the first game but figured i would give this one a shot. I am definitely sucked in at this point. You play a commander Shepard, customize your character. Basically there are these reapers that are destroying human colonies throughout the galaxy and you have to investigate what is going on. This is an awesome sci-fi / roleplaying / action game. Role playing aspect i took a jack bauer approach. The action is similar to gears, great cover system. Squad based mechanics are awesome.

Three words: Austrian Death Machine

Totally wanna make another music video for “Get to the Choppa” with video from Predator.

Nexus One update bringing pinch-to-zoom, Google Goggles, updated maps, T-Mobile 3G fix

You read that right, folks. The update to Google’s Nexus One that was thought to just be a basic 3G fix instead has been loaded with other goodies, including:

Google Googles (Visual search – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhgfz0zPmH4) will now be baked into the ROM.
Google Maps is being updated to sync starred items and search suggestions with the desktop version, and it automatically switches to night mode in Navigation to make it easier to read.
The aforementioned 3G fix.
And pinch-to-zoom. Yes, multitouch in the browser, gallery and maps.

Keep an eye on your notifications bar, which is where you’ll be alerted that the update is ready for you. Google says it will be rolled out gradually and that you might not get the update until the end of the week.

Amazon agrees to higher prices in e-book dispute
by Jennifer Guevin

Amazon said Sunday that, while it still believes a $14.99 price tag for e-books is “needlessly high,” it will have to give in to Macmillan’s demands to sell electronic versions of its books at a higher rate than Amazon’s usual $9.99.

The announcement comes after Amazon temporarily pulled Macmillan books from its Web site in a dispute over e-book pricing. Macmillan and other book publishers have asked Amazon to increase the sales price of e-books on its Web site. But Amazon stood firm in its contention that anything above $9.99 was too high–that is until now.

“We have expressed our strong disagreement and the seriousness of our disagreement by temporarily ceasing the sale of all Macmillan titles,” Amazon’s statement read. “We want you to know that ultimately, however, we will have to capitulate and accept Macmillan’s terms because Macmillan has a monopoly over their own titles, and we will want to offer them to you even at prices we believe are needlessly high for e-books.”

Macmillan books will eventually return to Amazon’s sites. And Amazon will charge between $12.99 and $14.99 for electronic versions of bestsellers and most hardcover releases. No time frame was given for the change, but on Sunday afternoon, top sellers from Macmillan–including Jeffrey Eugenides’ “Middlesex,” Ishmael Beah’s “A Long Way Gone,” and Michael Chabon’s “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay”–were still only available from third parties via Amazon’s Web site and could not be bought from Amazon directly.

Amazon’s statement hints at the precarious position it is in. On one hand, it wants to be known by consumers as a low-cost e-book distributor. On the other hand, if it can’t work out deals with all of the major book publishers, it risks being able to offer customers only a limited selection of titles.

Now, as Amazon said in its announcement, “Amazon customers will…decide for themselves whether they believe it’s reasonable to pay $14.99 for a bestselling e-book.”

Game Room Won’t Feature Teen, Mature Rated Games
Microsoft representative says only E and E10+ games will be in their virtual arcade.

By Kris Pigna, 01/31/2010

“Games available for download within ‘Game Room’ will carry either E or E10+ ratings,” this representative said to GamerBytes (via Kotaku). “We currently have no plans to feature titles of those [higher Teen and Mature] ratings.”

The reasoning behind this is where things get a little tricky, though. Originally, GamerBytes reported that Microsoft elected to get an ESRB rating for the Game Room feature itself, rather than have to rate every title that will launch within it. As such, they limited themselves to E and E10+ games only, and will have to continue to do so for every new game released for Game Room. The logic here is this will save Microsoft tons of money in ESRB rating fees since they supposedly wouldn’t have to rate future games for the service.

However, as GamerBytes’s report now notes, this logic doesn’t entirely hold water: Even if they limit themselves to only E-rated games, how will the ESRB know what new games are allowable unless they’re rated anyway?

But whatever the reason, the bluntness of Microsoft’s statement remains: No plans for Teen or Mature rated games any time soon. So for anyone hoping Game Room may eventually contain such gleefully violent classics (?) as Mortal Kombat and Primal Rage, you’re out of luck.

How To: Use Google Voice on your iPhone.

Google has put the power of HTML5 to work to finally bring a rich Google Voice web app to the iPhone (and Palm webOS).
The robust web application can be accessed by visiting m.google.com/voice on your mobile device and works with phones running iPhone 3.0 software and above and Palm webOS.

The new HTML5 web app includes a few extra bonuses like a sleek design for yourGoogle Voice inbox, the option to create homescreen icons for individual pages and the ability to display your Google Voice number as the outbound caller ID so you can easily receive return calls. You can also send and receive text messages for free.

You can also place home screen icons onto your iPhone’s screen for each individual portion of Google Voice, such as an icon for voicemail and a second for your contacts. Each one has its own icon! Google has done a fantastic job with this implementation of the product and it looks like a jailbreak is no longer needed for halfway decent access to your phone features.

Aside from that, Google has also changed their dial-in feature for listening to voicemail. Now when you call in, you don’t have to press any buttons to hear a message. This works great for me since my iPhone is in my glove compartment when I drive and I depend on the iPhone’s Voice Control feature to make and receive calls.

Get it at http://m.google.com/voice. If you have an invitation, sign up at http://voice.google.com.

The Geek’s View: The Hurt Locker

97% on rottentomatoes.com

Follows staff sergeant William James as he takes over a small counterforce that is specially trained to handle IED’s ( improvised explosive devices ) James loves his job a little too much. He is an adrenaline junkie and also extremely reckless. For example, there is one sequence where he comes across and IED and he proceeds to take off his bomb suit because he says that if he’s gonna die he wants to be comfortable. His character is not very believable but the situations in the movie are real. How the soldiers behave and the protocol that they follow in dealing with threats.

Saw it for rent on dvd, but waited till it was available in blu ray. Amazing DTS-master audio. I have this huge blown up 360 controller cardboard cut out and during one of the explosions in the movie, it knocked it off the wall and knocked over another resident evil standee that i have. I have never had a movie knock over anything in my theater room!

Everyone is saying that this will win best picture, i don’t know about that, but i do know it is a damn good movie.

Playin some Bayonetta. Nice to see the SEGA logo come up as the game starts up. Basically you are an umbra witch who fights angels. After killing these angels, they drop halos which are very reminiscent of the sonic rings. This game is insane, at first i couldn’t tell what was going on, like devil may cry on crack. Tech and Gaming News:

AT&T Insiders Report iPhone Exclusivity Going Away On Wednesday
Saturday, January 23, 2010 – by Shawn Oliver

It’s sort of hard to believe that all the hype from CES is already over and done with. Larger companies spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to introduce and showcase new products at the show, and now all anyone wants to talk about in the tech world is Apple. Must be nice to be Steve Jobs (or an investor). The company that gave the world the iPod and iPhone is planning a media event on the 27th of this month, and while the world tends to believe a tablet or slate of some sort is planned, there has been no definite proof of that to this point.

We really have no idea what’s next from Apple; we just know that it’ll be something to unleash one’s creative side according to a tagline in the invite. According to an inside source close to the going-ons involved in all of this, a new tablet of some sort may not be the only thing on deck for next Wednesday though. We have been led to believe by an inside source that AT&T will lose their iPhone exclusivity on the same day, though it’s not yet clear what other carrier (or carriers) will be stepping in to also carry the phone. For anyone who has followed the saga, you may notice that you haven’t seen AT&T fighting to extend their original exclusive agreement of late. In fact, they have spent most of their time fighting Verizon’s negative ad campaign.

This may not be all that surprising. Inside of AT&T, we are hearing that the iPhone is causing more trouble than ever before. On some level, having the iPhone is hurting AT&T’s image. Because they are the only company to carry it, and it’s such a data hog, it’s largely to blame for AT&T’s network troubles. We don’t remember hearing about AT&T’s “horrible network” before the iPhone–do you? The iPhone itself doesn’t really handle the switch from 3G to EDGE very well, so calls that are in-progress tend to fail whenever the 3G bands aren’t optimal and the phone attempts to step down to EDGE. It seems that AT&T is tired of taking the heat for this, and at this point, they may be smart to just let another carrier take some of those customers who are most inclined to complain.

We also heard that when AT&T loses their grip on the iPhone, they’ll be introducing a bunch of other new smartphones with new platforms in order to “compensate.” At CES, it was announced that new Windows Mobile, Android and webOS-based phones were destined to land on AT&T, but few details were provided as to when. Now, it seems the puzzle pieces are beginning to slot together. It’s possible that AT&T recently went searching for deals with other phone makers in order to proactively bolster its smartphone lineup for when this day-of-doom would come. AT&T has gained a huge amount of subscribers from being the only operator with the iPhone, and if it loses that advantage, it’ll need some other cutting-edge, high-brow phones to keep people’s attention.

One big happy family soon?

It’s hard to say what’ll happen if a carrier like Verizon gets the iPhone. Will existing iPhone users on AT&T run in droves to switch, regardless of the early termination fee? Will existing AT&T iPhone users stick with their plan? Maybe Apple will simply see a new influx of iPhone users, as customers who were always wary of AT&T finally make the jump now that the phone is a on a network with better perceived quality? We still have to take all of this as rumor for now, but we have very good reason to believe that we’ll see AT&T quietly (or perhaps not so quietly) lose its grip on the iPhone come Wednesday. What happens after that is anyone’s guess, but we would expect the overall iPhone market share in the US to surge quite significantly if it’s made available on a CDMA carrier.

Google Voice Arrives on iPhone With HTML5-Powered Web App

The robust web application can be accessed by visiting m.google.com/voice on your mobile device and works with phones running iPhone 3.0 software and above and Palm Web OS. Google has put the power of HTML5 to work to finally bring a rich Google Voice web app to the iPhone (and Palm Web OS).

The new HTML5 web app includes a few extra bonuses like a sleek design for your Google Voice inbox, the option to create homescreen icons for individual pages and the ability to display your Google Voice number as the outbound caller ID so you can easily receive return calls. You can also send and receive text messages for free.

Unfortunately Google Voice is still invite-only, which means that iPhone and Palm Web OS users who haven’t received a Google Voice invite are still out of luck.

Google’s decision to use HTML5 to circumvent Apple’s app store approval process while still powering a rich application experience on the iPhone demonstrates the flexibility of HTML5 in mobile web browsers, and also highlights a growing trend in iPhone application development.

‘Tremendous Interest’ in a Mass Effect Movie, says BioWare

No plans currently, but project director Casey Hudson says they’re looking at their options.

Could a Mass Effect film adaptation be in BioWare’s stars? Evidently yes: Although they’re currently not pursuing any offer, project director Casey Hudson says their intergalactic RPG series is attracting a lot of Hollywood attention.

“Obviously we have a tremendous amount of interest from people in Hollywood to make a major motion picture about Mass Effect,” he recently told MTV (via VG247). “The most important thing for us is, we don’t just want to see a movie get made. We want to see a great movie get made, if it’s going to get done at all.”

So for now that means no film adaptation is in the works, but that may change going forward. “We’re just looking at our options there, but waiting to make sure we have something really right before we do it,” Hudson explained.

How To: Customize your iTunes Equalizer on a Per-Song Basis

iTunes and iPod software allow you to control the equalization or “EQ” of a song.
iTunes equalizer presets

iPod’s equalizer has the same equalizer presets as iTunes (except Loudness). This allows a high level of integration between iPod and iTunes.

After you encode or “rip” a song using iTunes, you can assign that song one of 22 equalizer presets. Once you assign a preset to a song, iTunes will use it each time you play the song. When you copy the song from your computer to iPod, the equalizer preset you chose in iTunes is also copied, and iPod will play the song with the same preset. For example, if you assign a song the “Rock” preset in iTunes, iPod will play that song with the “Rock” preset and iPod will play the song with the same preset as long as the EQ on the iPod is not set to off.

If you don’t assign a preset to a song, iTunes and iPod simply play the song as it was encoded, unless you turn on the general equalizer, which applies to all songs being played. In this case, though, that equalizer preset is not saved with each song.
iPod’s equalizer settings offer a wide range of options, which are explained in the next section.
iPod EQ settings

EQ – Off
iPod does not use the equalizer. Songs play as they were encoded.
Songs that have been assigned an equalizer preset in iTunes do not play with that setting.

EQ – Flat
Songs without an equalizer preset assigned to them in iTunes play as they were encoded (same as EQ – Off).
Songs that have been assigned an equalizer preset in iTunes play with that setting.

EQ – (other)
Songs without an equalizer preset assigned to them in iTunes play using the EQ setting selected on iPod.
Songs that have been assigned an equalizer preset in iTunes play with that setting, not the one selected on iPod. You can temporarily play a song using one of iPod’s other EQ settings as follows:
Play the song on iPod.
While the song is playing, press the Menu button until you have navigated to the main screen.
Select Settings.
Select EQ.
Select a particular EQ setting you want to try.
The song will play to the end with the new EQ setting. The next time the song is played, it will play with the EQ setting assigned to it in iTunes.
Notes

iPod does not use custom equalizer settings made in iTunes.
You can’t create custom equalizer settings on iPod, or transfer custom settings to iPod.
Turn EQ off if you don’t use it. Equalizer is a feature that uses your iPod battery more quickly. If you don’t use EQ, your iPod will play tunes longer. Adding EQs to playback uses more of your iPod processor, since they aren’t encoded in the song. If, however, you’ve added EQ to tracks in iTunes, you’ll need to set EQ to “flat? in order to have the effect of “off,? because iPod keeps your iTunes settings intact.

Items of Note: Welcome to 2010! Now, where’s my flying car??

Geek This Week:

Aaron:

Got some great gifts for the holidays but decided to head out with the wife to pick up some items Santa didn’t drop off. I picked up an Apple Magic Mouse and also a Backpack shelf from Twelve South. The Magic Mouse is nice so far, though I’ve only used it for a few hours (I took it out of the box today). The Backpack shelf is a really handy shelf that attaches to the L mount on the back of my iMac, allowing for storage that is completely hidden. This let me take two external drives and place them out of sight. I took the opportunity to re-organize my desk and neaten it up. I didn’t regain much space but my desk is now much nicer looking and less crammed.

Oh yeah, you need to see Avatar.

Gozer:

Xbox red ringed! My wife allowed me to buy an arcade unit. When i get the second fixed one back it will go in the living room to play ( if i dont wanna put hours on my lamp) and to use the awesome zune marketplace. Watched a movie in full 1080p, looked great, downloaded it to the hard drive. An 11 gig movie took about 3 – 4 hours to download. There is an option to stream it too but i havent tried that.

New Years Eve ( not geeky but still funny) Dinner at Max brenner’s, Forbidden Planet, Karaoke and then times square.

To round out the 2009, we have a very special guest: Christina Warren from Mashable.com, geeklunch.tv and hivelogic.com. Be sure to follow her on Twitter at Twitter.com/Film_Girl.

Topic:

2010 Tech Predictions:

-Christina: Mobile devices and digital geolocation apps

-Aaron: Apple Tablet Unicorn lives on, Android paces iPhone sales to become neck-and-neck race

-Allen: Android. Android. More Android. Phones/Netbooks/GPS/Multi-media Tablet. Frankly, I want Android to run my kitchen. On a more serious note, I think the trend will turn from netbooks, which really haven’t done all that well, to 10″ touchscreens (whether it’s Apple or not). Portability will be taken to new heights.

Top Product of 2009:

Christina: Blu-Ray Player

Aaron: iPhone 3GS.

Allen: Google

Google ‘Nexus One’ phone. Possibly a hoax?

I gotta tell you I’ve been loving the tech tech heavy episodes. I can’t recall the episode number, but it was the first I think, I remember listening and really enjoying when you started signing off. I thought you were going for a shorter run time with the new style, but I looked at the runtime on my ipod and it was almost a full hour. You guys were just so entertaining that it seemed like 10 minutes.

Aaron: Still working on my Mac mini offsite backup server with CarbonCopyCloner. I am unsure if it’s going to work via the internet though because the remote mounting / automatic sharing seems to use internally assigned IP’s. The plan will be to get the Mac set up offsite with the drive and then implement the solution remotely.

Geek This Week:

Aaron:

Didn’t Black Friday shop but went shopping on Saturday to get a whole bunch of stuff. Picked up Super Mario Bros. for the Wii and I’ll be sure to give that a try later on this week. Found a fantastic iPhone app called ShopSavy that scans barcodes. It will then check all prices online along with local stores using the iPhone’s location, which is awesome. It shows reviews and lets you save items to check later. A fantastic app and it’s free! It’s a total must-have for the holiday shopper.

Gozer:

Had a great thanksgiving, played modern warfare 2 local multiplayer free for all death match with my wife’s family. Really alot more fun playing with people next to you than over live. My father in law and uncle in law stayed up all night to go to wal mart to get $80 cameras and 50 AA for $9. They stayed up all night researching!!!

Playin a ton of New Super Mario Bros. Havin alot of fun playin it with my wife. We are on world 8 and these worlds get increasingly harder. Also playing it single player, alot easier to get through but it is fun to have the co-op experience. The cool thing about co-op is you pretty much have infinite lives and continues. Everytime someone dies they can come back when the level is over +5 lives. If you both die on the same level with no lives left then the game is over and you will revert back to your last game save.

Tried out the new Scene It. Not really that impressed. NO avatar support like the last game and NO ONLINE PLAY!! very disappointing. They have this thing where you select stereotypical hollywood characters as your avatars, to choose these avatars then start the game is a pain in the ass. It almost seems more like a game show then a movie trivia game. There is this host that follows you around and tells you what is going on. Also, i am still not sure about this, you earn stars at the end of each round and you can use these stars to get a points multiplier for the next round. If you miss getting this multiplier, it will go to another player. Lots of current movies than classic movies in this version. I believe warner brothers picked up this new version.

Tech and Gaming News:

Google to track TiVo viewing habits

Google and TiVo know you accidentally watch a few ads while fast-forwarding through the commercial breaks of your recorded programs, and they’d like a little more data to back that up.

Google plans to add TiVo “television viewing data” to its existing Google TV Ads program, the two companies said in a press release Tuesday. Google TV Ads is the company’s attempt to re-create its AdWords and AdSense model on the small screen through a partnership with Dish Network, and it wants to use TiVo data to help its advertising clients measure how and when their ads are viewed.

DVRs like TiVo are not the favorite tech product of the television advertising business, as they allow viewers to watch shows whenever they like and skip the commercials. But most DVR owners (except for a few masters of the remote control) catch glimpses of ads as they whiz by, or overshoot the end of the commercial period and hit the 30-second rewind button, exposing them to the last ad shown before the program resumes.

That kind of viewing shouldn’t count as a full ad impression, since the advertiser knows the viewer didn’t watch the full ad, but Google seems to feel that it can’t be completely ignored, either. It plans to use “anonymous second-by-second DVR viewing data” to track how viewers see ads placed through Google TV Ads. It also gives Google more access to viewer behavior on sources outside of Dish Network, including cable, satellite, and over-the-air viewers.

That could presumably make Google TV Ads more attractive to potential advertisers, since Google will be able to assemble a wealth of data on the viewing habits of DVR owners. Google also has a deal with Nielsen for viewing data, although some feel the new TiVo partnership will put a lot of strain on that relationship. In a somewhat related move, TiVo has also partnered with MillerCoors to expose football fans to Coors Light ads when they are fast-forwarding through recorded NFL games.
