How To: Upgrade your computer’s memory (RAM)

Of all hardware upgrades to do, upgrading memory is the easiest and takes little work. Anyone can do it with the right information. For this upgrade, all you need is a screwdriver.

Get your computer’s manufacturer information and find out what type of RAM your motherboard supports. Companies like Dell will have this information readily available. If you have a custom-built PC, check the manual of the motherboard maker or their website with the model number.

Once you know what RAM you can buy, go buy it. Great deals are had at zipzoomfly.com pricewatch.com and newegg.com Expect to pay shipping and you should buy name brand RAM, as there’s a better chance it won’t be dead on arrival.

After purchasing your RAM, you’re set to go:

1. Unplug your PC and lay it on the side, motherboard side up.
2. Open the case.
3. Locate the RAM slots. Each chip for a PC only goes in one place and only one way.
4. Insert RAM, making sure the side clips snap into place and the RAM is firmly in there. You can be firm with the insertion but do not force it in.
5. Close up the case and hook up the power.
6. Enjoy faster computing.

Hack:

Copy music from your iPod to your PC

Apple says the iPod is a one way transfer. That’s a bunch of crap. Get your songs off the iPod by doing the following:

1. In Windows, turn on the ability to see hidden folders.
2. Mount your iPod in Disk Mode.
3. Open your iPod in My Computer.
4. Navigate to the folder iPod_Control\Music
5. Each folder listed will contain the music on your iPod. Change view to Details view to see the tag information.
6. Drag and drop the files from those folders to your PC and the copying will begin.
