How To: PC Spring Cleaning (Part 1)

With spring upon us, it’s a great time to clean out our computers not just on the harddrive, but also the physical case. This three-part segment will assist you in the areas to focus on for this project.

Cleaning the hardware:

- Unplug & open the case, open it up, and put it on its side. Using a vacuum with a cone-shaped head, carefully vacuum up all the dust in the case, being careful not to hit against any of the components.

- You can use a can of compressed air to get into those hard-to-reach places to dislodge the dust. Combined with a vacuum, you can get all the dust out.

- If the front of your computer case comes off, take that off and vacuum out all the dust in there. It usually clumps up in there as well.

- Flip your keyboard upside down and shake it like an etch-a-sketch to get out all the garbage that has gotten itself under your keys. You can also take all the keys off to get an even better cleaning.

- Get behind your case and monitor and clean out the dust that has made a home behind all your components.

- This is also a good time to unplug all your cables and re-run them so the wires are more organized and not a mess.

Hack: Another way to edit TiVoToGo files.

Dr. DivX opens your original .tivo file, with the blessing of the Tivo Desktop password/dll, and converts the file to a divx encoded .avi in just three clicks. The time to transcode your file is variable depending on your source file and the size/quality of your output file, but you can expect more than real time. Dr. DivX offers a free trial.
