Tech news:

Lawyers for Apple Computer and a trio of Mac enthusiast Web sites met in court on Friday in a case that could have wide-ranging implications for the future–and even the definition–of online journalism.

Apple is seeking the right to subpoena the e-mail providers of three Mac-focused sites that published information documenting details of future Apple products. The company says that information was stolen, and is seeking legal action against employees who leaked the data. But it says it needs the Web sites’ sources in order to identify the employees.

A California state judge issued a tentative ruling late Thursday that would give Apple the go-ahead to pursue that information from the Web sites’ Internet service provider, but the judge did not issue a final decision at Friday’s hearing.

How To: Save your life

Most VOIP companies offer 911 for emergencies but the dialing is not turned on automatically. In an emergency, you may not be able to get through to the proper people that can assist you. You must manually enable 911 for each phone number you have through your VOIP provider. Below is how to do it on Vonage, one of the leading VOIP providers out there.

1. Pull up vonage.com and log in.
2. Click the Features link on the top.
3. The top area will list your 911 feature. Select your phone number and press the Continue button.
4. You will fill in your location address and change any options to enable the 911 dialing to the enabled or ‘on’ setting.
5. Submit your information and you’re set. Watch your e-mail for a confirmation.
