Tech news:

Adobe has agreed to purchase Macromedia. Valued at 3.4 billion dollars, the all-stock deal is designed to create a better source of tools for building and content across a range of operating systems. They also stressed that the merger will enable them to expand more rapidly into the market for audio and video applications for handhelds and other gadgets.

You can win a Powerbook or iPod at the Tiger Premeire. According to Apple’s retail site you can win a Powerbook, iPod, or other prizes if you go to the local Apple from 6:00 pm to 12:00 AM. Tiger comes out on April 29.

Skype today claimed that its software has been downloaded by over 100 million computer users. To mark the occasion, the company has launched two premium services: SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail. SkypeIn customers choose a country and area code and are assigned a standard telephone number. Anyone may call the SkypeIn user’s SkypeIn number wherever the user travels, and no international roaming charges are incurred.

How To: Use Google Suggest within Firefox’s built-in searching.

When using firefox it’s great that you can search Google from right inside the browser. Google Suggest is a fantastic version of the standard Google search engine that is still currently in Beta within Google’s labs. Google Suggest allows you to see your search results as you type your query into the text box. When doing this, you get a drop-down menu with suggested search terms. There is now a Firefox extention that you can install that will give you this functionality right in the browser.

Head on over to the website http://www.loconet.ca/?action=firefox and you will see a link to install GSuggest. Click this and follow the instructions Firefox prompts for allowing extention installation. Once you have it installed, click the G icon in the search box and change the search from regular Google to GoogleSuggest. Now you’re set to search faster.

Ask A Geek:

Kevin from Michigan asks how he can record XM Radio that is coming to his computer via AOL radio without additional equipment.

There are many ways to record audio coming from your PC and the process you are speaking of is called StreamRipping. Currently this is legal and there are programs out there to help. One that I found is called RipCast and it allows you to record audio streams directly to your harddrive. You will need to find the stream information that AOL is using, or you can use the built-in radio directory that comes with the program. Some poking around on Google or Download.com may help you as well with locating the perfect piece of software that you need.

Ripcast comes in free and pay versions and can be found at

Hack: Surf the web anonymously

When you surf the internet, you are never anonymous. Your IP address is logged wherever you go and you always can be traced to who you really are. A relay or proxy between you and the internet can help solve this problem. Head on over to http://www.the-cloak.com and click the surf! link at the bottom of the site. Here you are presented with your surfing options and a URL to go to. People who’s websites you visit will not see your real IP address and you are now surfing ‘cloaked’. While the internet is never fully anonymous, this helps a lot. You can also check out anonymizer.com for more ways to surf the internet anonymously.
