Tech news:

In the first 48 hours since its Tuesday release, Opera 8 was downloaded more than 600,000 times. By comparison, rival Firefox claimed 1,000,000 copies grabbed in the opening 24 hours after its 1.0 version went final in early November 2004.

In many places around the world, Mac fans and Apple distributors received a shipment they weren’t quite expecting: OS X 10.4 Tiger arrived at the door a full eight days ahead of schedule for some lucky folks who pre-ordered.

Firefox has been hit by eight security flaws, six of which are also found in the older Mozilla suite. The vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to take over an affected system, carry out cross-site scripting and bypass some security restrictions, the Mozilla Foundation warned at the same time it released patches for the holes. Independent security firm Secunia gave the updates a “highly critical” rating. The patches are the third round of security fixes for Firefox and the seventh update for the 1.7 version of Mozilla.

How To: Using Gmail with Thunderbird

GMail rocks and they allow you to use any e-mail application to access your account. If your e-mail client supports pop3 (almost all do) then you’re set to use this instead of your web browser.

Open Thunderbird or Mozilla Suite mail, go to Tools -> go to “Account Settings” -> click “Add Account” button -> select “Email Account” -> click “Next” button. Enter your name and Gmail address in the “Email Address” field. Select POP (on top) and enter pop.gmail.com in the “Incoming Server” field. Unselect “Use Global Inbox(Store Mail in Local Folders)” and click next. Enter your entire Gmail address in the “Incoming User Name:” field in the “Outgoing User Name:” field. On the next screen enter a name for your email account. Click next and then finish.

Now there will be new account created in “Account Settings” called “Gmail”. Go to “Server Settings” under Gmail -> select the 1st checkbox-”Use Secure connection(SSL)” -> select the 4th checkbox-”Check for new messages every 10 minutes”, don’t select anything more. Go to “Outgoing Server SMTP” in “Account Settings” then click “Advanced” button -> click “Add” button. In “Server Name” field write smtp.gmail.com, “Use name and password” box must be selected, in “User Name” field enter your entire Gmail address and under “Use Secure Connection” select SSL. After selecting SSL, the port number will automatically change from 25 to 465. Click OK twice.

Go back to “Server Settings” under the “Gmail” account -> click “Advanced” button, go to “SMTP” tab. Under “Server” field drop-down select the last one. Normally it will be smtp.gmail.com:465, under the “POP” tab select “Inbox for this server’s account” and click “OK” button. Close and re-launch Thunderbird.

Finally, you need to configure GMail on the website to enable POP access. After logging into your Gmail account click the settings link up top and then the Forwarding and POP” tab. Under “POP Download:” choose either “Enable POP for all mail (even mail that’s already been downloaded)” or “Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on”. Save the changes.

Now you will be set to use Thunderbird with GMail. Thunderbird will ask for your Gmail password twice, once when you send, then again when you receive e-mail. You should enter the password correctly both times when prompted. you can use the Password Manager to remember the password so you don’t have to enter it again. Now you can receive all the Gmails in Thunderbird and Mozilla Suite mail while online and read the letters when you are offline.

Hack: Control iTunes via your TiVo

Apple’s Airport Express is a great way to listen to your iTunes library on your home sterio. The down-side to the technology is that you need to be physically at your computer in order to control the sound coming to your speakers. This gripe was the inspiration for this new great program called iSee iTunes.

iSee iTunes is a program that integrates into your TiVo unit to control iTunes on your computer. TiVo has a SDK (software development kit) that you can download to write applications for use on your TiVo. This project called the HME (Home Media Engine) opens your TiVo to network applications that are only limited to your imagination and coding ability. iSee iTunes integrates into your TiVo and works great.

Requirements: TiVo series 2 running software version 7 with a network adapter, Apple Airport Express, iTunes, java 1.4.2 or higher on your computer.

Here’s how to set it up:

1. Go to http://tivohme.sourceforge.net/?page=quickstart and download the HME QuickStart.

2. Go to http://homepage.mac.com/kylecopeland/FileSharing11.html and download iSee iTunes for either Windows or Mac OsX.

3. Double-click the quickstart.jnlp file you downloaded, which is the QuickStart application. It will launch and display instructions to

enable your TiVo to use HME applications. Once you complete these steps, proceed to step 4.

4. Unzip iSee iTunes and then double-click iSeeiTunes.bat to start the program. It will begin to run.

5. Launch iTunes and set your speakers to your Airport Express unit.

6. On your TiVo, select Music, Photo’s and more and then you will see an option for iSee iTunes. Select that and then you can control your iTunes music via your TV and the music will come out your sterio unit.
