How To: Sell merchandise online with zero overhead.
If you would like to sell t-shirt and other merchandise online but cannot afford companies that make you purchase 50 or 100 items, you should check out CafePress. CafePress is a website that allows you to sell shirts, mugs, stickers, CD’s, mousepads, and anything else you can brand. They have no minimum runs and handle all aspects of your store.
You first create an account at cafepress.com and then select the items you want to sell. You then upload your graphics to an image bank for your account and then you can customize the product with those images. Cafepress has base prices for each item, which is their cost to make the product. You set the price you want and the difference is your profit. CafePress will handle the website ordering, payment processing, manufacturing and shipping. All you have to do is set up the site and promote your store. Once you sell at least $10 of profit a month, they send you a check. Any money not getting to that point rolls over to the next month.
Cafepress is a great website that is easy to use, makes quality items, and is reliable for sending you your profit checks. Best of all, it’s free to use. Go ahead and check them out at Cafepress.com.

The geek’s view: Mac OsX 10.4 (Tiger)
On April 29th, Apple relased the latest version of their Macintosh operating system. Version 10.4, named Tiger, has been hotly anticipated for months and Steve Jobs has been showing off some of the new features at his past couple of keynote speeches. Claiming over 200 product enahancements, Tiger will have a familiar feel to current OsX users but there are new goodies that you can take advantage of right away.
Spotlight- Spotlight is the main feature that Jobs was showing off on Tiger. Spotlight is a built-in search feature for your computer that automatically indexes your computer and allows you to find any file quickly. Showing catigorized results, Spotlight brings up your results as you type them so there is no waiting. You can also save a search to a ‘smart folder’ that will automatically update based on your search critieria. This is a great way to find files that may be in a certain state on your computer at any time.
Dashboard- Have you heard of Konfabulator? well this is Apple’s iteration of it, which is free. Dashboard is a feature that shows ‘widgets’ on command and they dissapear just as easily. What’s a widget? It’s a small graphical program that does a small task visually. It can show you your current weather, calandar, dictionary search, sicky note and much more. It’s highly customizable and you can get more widgets for free from Apple’s web site.
Automator- If you wanted to automate repetitive functions in OsX but didn’t like AppleScript, then you can use Automator to build easy to follow workflows. You can select the program you want to control, select the query and then an action. Automator is great when you want to move certain files or if you find you constantly do the same functions all the time.
Misc- Mail and Quicktime have both been upgraded. Safari now has a built-in RSS reader. You can display your RSS feeds as a screen saver, that is really slick, streamlined, and just plain old cool.
Overall, OsX Tiger is a solid release that has good additions while not overhauling the fantastic Apple experience. If you find that $130 is a bit much right now to spend, rest easy that Panther will suffice just fine. There is no rush to get this upgrade to your computer but it’s nice to have. Also if you can score a student discount it will only cost you $70.
