Tech news:

Apple has released the 10.4.1 update for Tiger. The update delivers overall improved reliability for Mac OS X v10.4 and is recommended for all users. It includes improvements for: using DHCP in wireless networks, core graphics including updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers, synchronization with .Mac, Address Book, iCal, Font Book, Mail, and Preview applications, Dashboard widgets: Address Book, Flight Tracker, Phone Book, and World Clock and more

Apple may release remote control for the Airport Express. The latest version of iTunes (4.8) contains an error message, if you’ve got a firewall configured you’ll get a message saying ”…using a firewall software prevents you from… using a remote control for AirTunes.” This could be something very cryptic, but remote control support for AirTunes would be a great addition to the AE solution.

Microsoft launches a desktop search tool. On Sunday Microsoft released the finalized version of its desktop search tool. The MSN Search Toolbar, which was introduced on a trial basis five months ago, provides a way to search for e-mail, documents and other data stored on hard drives much more quickly and efficiently than the “Find” function found in Windows. How long will it be before we need a ‘security update’ for this wonderful piece of software?

IE 7 has been confirmed to have tabs. Welcome to the party Microsoft. Better late than never, eh?

How To: Use a dock on Windows

One great feature of Apple’s OsX is the dock. The dock is kind of like the taskbar in Windows but looks nicer, is not as bulky and just plain old cool in functionality. If you’re a Windows user you are limited by what Microsoft offers in innovation, which is usually zero. Well now, you can get your Mac OS fill with a great free program called Object Dock.

Object Dock is a free program that emulates the look and functionality of the Apple dock. Using high-resolution .png files, you can have accurate representations of programs on the dock and when you minimize programs it can replace that icon with a screen capture. Once installed, Object Dock is highly cusomizable. You can adjust the magnification, dock size, skin, side of the screen it is on, and fully customize the icons in the dock and their order. Some other items that are nice touches are full skinning, a built in clock and weather ‘docklets’, and a replacement for your Recycle Bin.

Overall, Object Dock is fun to use and if you’re a mac person you will definitly feel more at home while getting your feet wet on a Windows box. While not for everyone, Object Dock is fun to use and easily removable if you don’t like it.

Object Dock comes in a free version and can be found at stardock.com/products/objectdock

Hack:

Burning ISO’s

When you ‘aquire’ software, usually you can find it in what is known as an ISO. An ISO is an image of a disk, folder, harddrive, ect. When downloading software and you complete it, you may notice that the file has an ISO extention. People will tell you that you need to burn the ISO in order to use it. The normal interpretation of this sentence is misleading and usually will not work.

ISO files cannot be burned by opening your burner software and adding the file to a data disk. It will not work that way. What you need to do is open the ISO file within your burning software using the File, Open Image menu item. You will then be presented with a burning dialog box with minimal options. At that point burn the disk and then you will have a proper CD when it is complete.

By browsing the CD after it’s burned, you will then be able to use it as the original person intented. Almost all burning software can open and burn ISO files, but if your software does not, you can download Nero Burning Rom from www.nero.com and get your ISO’s to CD with that.
