Tech news:
Ninety pct of DVR users skip TV ads. TV advertisers are facing a potential disaster as more consumers buy digital video recorders (DVRs), according to a new study, since about 90 percent of current users fast-forward through ads. The trends are even more foreboding among the 18 to 34-year-old demographic most coveted by marketers, with 97 percent saying they skip ads all or almost all of the time.
More cellphone lines than landlines in the US. The FCC has released a report confirming that as of late last year the number of cellphone lines in the U.S. officially surpassed the number of landlines. It’s still pretty much 50/50 — at the time of the survey there were 181.1 million cellphone lines versus 177.9 million landlines but the shift towards wireless is undeniable.
TiVo slashes price on entry-level boxes. TiVo said it is cutting the cost of its 40-hour Series2 digital video recorder (DVR) in half–from $199 to $99–in an effort to drive sales this summer. The cost on the 80-hour and 140-hour boxes will remain the same for now, but a representative with the San Jose, Calif.-based company said the dropped price on the entry-level model will stay at $99 until August 20.
Hardware: Intel Developer Macs Outperform G5s. Developers working with the new Intel-based, developer-only Macs are impressed with the performance. The machines take as little as 10 seconds to boot from Apple logo to desktop, and apparently run Windows XP at ‘blazing speeds.’ Rosetta tests demonstrate the PowerPC-native build of Firefox running just as fast as it does on a high-end G5.
