Do those ‘get things for free’ websites really work? Lets find out. If you would like to help, click here and sign up for a free trial. If I get 9 completions, I can “get a free mac mini”. Lets see if this works, and I will report on the progress on future editions of the Geekcast. Anyone who helps can have their choice of a GMail or Yahoo 360 invitation.

Does anyone have an old colored iBook they’re looking to get rid of? Let me know via e-mail, geekcast@gmail.com Thanks.

Tech news:

C|Net features Top 10 Web fads. Included on the list is the infamous Hampster Dance, All Your Base, Friendster, and our favorite Mac user Ellen Feiss.

Longhorn’s true name revealed. Microsoft has announced that Longhorn will be named Windows Vista. Microsoft’s advertising tagline for Vista is “Clear, Confident, Connected: Bringing clarity to your world.” Slashdot reader Veggiedude sees “VISTA” as an acronym for “the top five Windows problems: virses, infections, spyware, trojans and adware,” he wrote. The first beta of Vista is expected Aug. 3, targeted at developers and IT professionals, while a second release for consumers will likely debut ahead of Vista’s final release in the second half of next year.

Google’s 2nd-quarter profit quadruples. Google’s second-quarter profit quadrupled as the online search leader continued to exceed the great expectations underlying its soaring stock, but apparently it still wasn’t good enough for investors demanding even more outlandish growth. Google said Thursday that it earned $342.8 million for the three months ended in June. The results compared with net income of $79.1 million, or 30 cents per share, at the same time last year.

How To: Get a good deal

When looking for bargains online, there is no better place than fatwallet.com. People are constantly looking to edge out the competition and get the lowest price for good stuff.

On the surface, fatwallet is just another website for coupons and people to talk on the messageboards. Upon further anaylisys, there are tons of things you can find on this site that can save you some cash. The main page brings you to a no nonsense choice of if you want coupons, cash back or to read the forums.

Fatwallet has joined up with many legit websites such as Amazon, Staples and more to offer small discounts when visiting the website via fatwallet. The discounts can be small, but most average anywhere between 3% and 10% depending on the vendor.

On top of this, you can get all the latest coupon codes to sweeten the deal even more. People do what is called ‘stacking’ where you combine coupons to get a lower price. Going even further, people take a good look at return policies and price-matching to learn the best way to lower the price. People ‘re-buy’ where you return an item and purchase it back at the open-box price. Price matching goes far when finding obscure websites that merchants will compete with.

Finally, people will use a Discover credit card to get cash back on the purchases while learning the ‘customer save’ tactics that companies use to stop you from leaving. AOL will give you gobs of free service to stay with them. TiVo will cut your subscription price in half to keep you on-board, and the list goes on and on.

Overall, fatwallet is a place that is never quiet and there is a new messageboard post every minute. It’s definitly a place to check out when you’re looking for that great deal.
