geek Speak:
With my rant last episode about internet explorer, I had some interesting feedback about the swiss-chesse browser we all know and love. Here’s some of your thoughts:
I listened to show #44 and you sort of ripped into IE, specifically IE7, as not being standards compliant while Opera and Firefox are. Well, they do a better job of the Acid2 test but none of the 3 browsers (Opera 8.x, FF 1.0.6 or IE6 or IE7) show the test as it is supposed to be rendered. FF and Opera render it better then IE does, but neither do it 100%. As for attacking IE for spyware, I can tell you that as an IE user since the initial version, I nor my wifes/kids computers have ever had spyware. Why is that? Maybe we’re just bright enough to NOT click on crap that pops up, or we don’t frequent less then honarble sites, or is it something else?
-David
Hi. I just want to comment on what you said last show. Far from all browsers have passed the acid 2 test. As a mather of fact not even firefox or opera has passed and it’s only three browsers who has. Safari, don’t know if that was a dev version or if it’s released now. Konqueror, same as safari and a browser called iCab. So I don’t think it’s all correct to complain about IE not passing when far from all browsers have passed the test.

Tech news:
Apple sells 1 million songs in four days in Japan. It only took Apple four days to dominate the lucrative Japanese music market as the company announced on Sunday that it had already sold more than 1 million songs on the iTunes Music Store Japan. “iTunes has become Japan’s number one online music store in just four days,” said Steve Jobs. “iTunes has sold twice as many songs in just four days as all the other online music services in Japan sell in one month.”
Daylight-saving change could confuse gadgets. Today President Bush signed a sweeping energy bill that will lengthen daylight-saving time by four weeks starting in 2007. For most computer users, the effect would likely be an inconvenience at worst: Their computers will be updated with new software by then, or configured to connect to network time servers that will know the correct time. But because not everyone’s computer is networked or updated, some glitches could occur–especially in consumer electronics devices that aren’t designed to be reprogrammed.
NBC returning TV shows to regular start/end times. After a couple years of NBC tweaking start and end show times to push their advertising dollars (and tweak PVR owners in the process), it seems they’re abandoning the practice of starting early and ending late. This fall line-up preview of NBC’s shows shows a clear return to shows ending on the hour and half-hour, exactly. This is good news for those missing network shows due to 1-minute conflicts.

First Windows Vista Viruses Pop Up. Mere days after the Windows Vista beta was released, an Austrian hacker has released the first virus for it. Written in July, the virus takes advantage of Vista’s command shell, code-named Monad. They were written by a hacker calling himself “Second Part to Hell”, and they were actually finished before the beta was released. According to the IDG News Service, because of its sophistication, the new command shell offers new opportunities for hackers, Second Part To Hell wrote in the tutorial. “Monad will be like Linux’s BASH (Bourne Again Shell)–that means a great number of commands and functions,” he wrote. “We will be able to make as huge and complex scripts as we do in Linux.”
