Tech news:

Google Talk debuts. Amid all speculation that Google was coming out with an IM client, this past wednesday, Google announced Google Talk, which is currently in beta, as much of their products are. Google Talk is a slimmed down IM client that runs only on Windows but utilizes the Jabber protocal so people on any platform can use it. The advantage of the Windows client is a built-in search for contacts and automatic buddy list creation from your Gmail account, which is required to use the new chat client. Inital reviews were overall mixed about the service, but the overall feeling is that Google will add features to it quickly.

NY Times busts P2P myth for declining movie sales. “With the last of the summer blockbusters fading from the multiplex, Hollywood’s box office slump has hardened into a reality that is setting the movie industry on edge. Multiples theories for the decline abound: a failure of studio marketing, the rising price of gas, the lure of alternate entertainment, even the prevalence of commercials and pesky cellphones inside once-sacrosanct theaters. But many movie executives and industry experts are beginning to conclude that something more fundamental is at work: Too many Hollywood movies these days, they say, just are not good enough. “Part of this is the fact that the movies may not have lived up to the expectations of the audience, not just in this year, but in years prior,” said Michael Lynton, chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, which had some flops this summer, including the science fiction action movie “Stealth” and the romantic comedy “Bewitched.” “Audiences have gotten smart to the marketing, and they can smell the good ones from the bad ones at a distance.”

The agreement stems from consumers’ complaints that AOL customer service representatives would either ignore requests, or make it unduly difficult, to cancel their service, according to a statement from Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Spitzer said that an incentive system AOL had developed for its customer service representatives contributed to most of the actions that drew complaints.
