How To: Troubleshoot your VoIP.
Whether you have Vonage, Packet 8 or the phone service from your local cable company, there are times you may have no dialtone on your line. When this happens, the first instinct of a lot of people is to get upset and also frantic because this is something most are not used to. While VoIP is great, there are times your phone could be off. When that happens, there are things you can do to help resolve the situation easily.
First, make sure your internet service is on. Is the ‘online’ light on your cable modem lit solid? Can you get online? These are the first things to check because if your internet is out then your phone is too. If you can’t get online then you should unplug then plug back in your cable modem. If you still can’t get online then call your cable company to see what is going on.
If you can get online then you need to focus on the wiring in your house and also any phone adaptors given to you by your phone company. If you have a phone adaptor / router / PBX box, then make sure to unplug & plug that back in. Most of the time a quick ‘power cycle’ can solve a lot of problems.
If you still have no dialtone at this point, you should then bypass your whole house’s wiring. To do this, take a telephone and plug it directly into the phone jack on your cable modem or phone adaptor. By putting a phone directly into what supplies your phone, you can see if your house wiring is acting up or if there truly is no dialtone.
By going through these simple steps, you can save yourself a lot of aggravation and most of the time get your phone service working great.

The geek’s view: Garageband 3
Garageband 3 is the latest version of Apple’s music application, which is bundled with iLife ’06. On the surface, the program looks the same but where Apple has really made improvements is in the integration of tools to help you create a podcast.
Steve Jobs showed at MacWorld that Garageband comes with the ‘podcast studio’. This is no different than a regular composition, it just has additional tracks when you record. Garageband has a Podcast Track that when selected, will allow you to put show information into the info area and also drag your album art onto the track. This allows you to embed album art right into the file with ease. On top of this, you can make chapters for your file easily by scissors (edit) item. This allows you to specify timecodes, URL’s, Titles for the links and more. What this all comes down to is that you can easily produce your show.
Apple has included many sound effects, stingers and jingles to make everyone’s shows have more flavor. Combine this with iChat recording for interviews, you can make some really great shows. On top of all this, you can still use it to make great recordings for music. What hasn’t been spoken about too much is that you can insert a video track where you can ‘score’ to the movie so you can create soundtracks to the movies you create.
Using iWeb, Apple’s new web publishing platform, you can easily export your creations to a website and have that uploaded to your iDisk. iWeb takes care of uploading the file, publishing it and the RSS. Basically, it’s been made easy. That’s the way Apple likes it.
Overall, Garageband 3 is a MAJOR step forward for this great application. Apple has seen people want to use this for podcasting and they have not disappointed. This is one of the main reasons to pick up iLife ’06, which retails for $79.99 and can be found at Apple.com.
