Ask A Geek:
Alejandro asks: I have a comment: I’ve noticed that when you first started your podcast, it was all Windows related tips&tricks, but after you got your Mac you’ve integrated a lot of material for Mac users, which is cool; but I was wondering if you are planning, hopefully in the near future, to integrate anything Linux related? I’m a Windows user, but over the last month I’ve been playing with the Ubuntu/Kubuntu Linux distro. I’m not a programmer or anything, I’m just curious, so I would like to hear tips and recommendations for non-techies Linux users (like me).
On another subject, I purchased a DVD from Amazon UK and I didn’t think, when I was buying it, about the region crap of DVDs. Now I have this Region #2 DVD that I haven’t been able to watch because I don’t have an All-Region DVD player, I’ve tried searching on google and found several hacks to change the DVD player’s firmware and make it region free but none had worked, unfortunatelly I’m at work right now and I don’t have the specific model of my DVD player with me. Now, I was wondering if there was a way to burn the DVD and create a Region-Free DVD copy of this movie?
Answer: When it comes to region-free players, Apex made a big splash with hackable players a few years ago, while it was easy to get one of these back in ’02, they are hard to come by now. Software hacks can be found with some searching but most DVD players are not easily hacked. The best way to make a region-free DVD is to rip the DVD to a file and then re-burn it using Nero as a region-free disk. You can also just rip the DVD to a DivX file and play it on your computer. Nero, Dr. DivX and other programs exist that can accomplish this task for you.

Hack: Download Windows updates regardless of your key
If you have a copy of Windows XP that doesn’t have a legitimate key, getting updates is not possible. Microsoft has locked out this essential feature of owning an XP box in order to get you to pay up. While the authentication for the site used to be optional or for downloads that weren’t essential, now you must have a legitimate key. That is of course you hack the website.
When you go to the Windows Update website you’re presented with two options: custom or Express. If you were to make a choice now you would be given an error like Invalid CD Key or something to that effect. If you want your updates anyway then put this in the title bar:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck=’all’) and press enter
Then make your selection. The process will continue normally, just leaving out the little part about verifying your key.
