Tech news:
TiVo and DirecTV extend contract. TiVo and DirecTV said Wednesday that they will extend their commercial agreement for three years. The agreement will allow existing DirecTV customers using the TiVo digital video recorder to continue to receive maintenance and support from DirecTV. As part of the agreement, TiVo and DirecTV also said they wouldn’t sue each other over patent rights.
Google Launches Google Calendar. Google launched a new Web-based calendar service that will let users add meetings and events using their own words. Dubbed Google Calendar, a beta version of the service is live. In development for “several months,” the service initially will be integrated with Google’s Gmail e-mail service. Bloggers have been speculating about Google’s possible entry into the calendar space for more than a year, and some believe that the search engine giant’s involvement could spur a flurry of Web calendar development.
TiVo wins patent suit. TiVo Inc. won a jury trial in a Texas lawsuit against EchoStar Communications Corp. over a patent for technology that lets a viewer record one TV program while watching another, a court official said. Details of the verdict by a federal court jury in Marshall, Texas, weren’t immediately available, said a court clerk who declined to give her name. The victory may mean TiVo can receive significant licensing fees for its technology, raising the cost of digital video recorders for cable and satellite companies paying for TiVo-like boxes, an analyst said.

How To: Subscribe to a Google Calendar using iCal
So Google has released a web calendar that supports the iCal format. If you don’t want to give up the great Apple program with all its integration into the rest of you iLife, turn the subscription feature upside-down and use iCal to subscribe to your Google calendars.
In order to subscribe to your own Google Calendar, first log into Googe Calendar. You’ll notice the Manage calendars link on the left hand side of your calendar. Click on that.
After you click on ‘Manage calendar’ you should be in the Calendars tab of the Calendar Settings screen. Click on the ‘Sharing’ setting.
This brings you to ‘Share this calendar’ where you can pick to publicly share a calendar or share it with only certain people.
Now just click on the Calendar Details tab, and you’ll see a whole bunch of info about the calendar you are currently in. The part we want is the ‘Calendar Address,’ which is the web address that iCal needs to subscribe to your calendar. Simply click on the green ‘ICAL’ button shown below. Clicking on the ICAL button will result in a pop up showing you an address. Copy it, and create a new calendar in iCal.
Command click on the newly created calendar and pick ‘Subscribe’. Now paste the web address you got from clicking on the green ICAL button into the ‘Subscribe to’ field and give it a name. Now click ‘OK’, and there you have it! Events you add to your Google Calendar will now show up on this iCal calendar, though you can’t actually add events using iCal.

Ask A Geek:
Nick asks:
I opened a setup in a download file that was supposed to be a video. I knew I shouldn’t of
opened it but I did! I immediately ran Spybot Search & Destroy and I thought I got rid of all of it (spyware), but I didn’t! The problem is my computer lauches my browser (firefox) and goes to different adware sites telling me to buy antivirus and antispyware programs. I’ve also ran Nortan Antivirus 2004 and Spybot in safe mode too which got rid of some spyware but my browser still brings up the adware sites.
Answer: When it comes to spyware, we can never be too careful. Now that you’ve inserted this file into your computer, there’s a few ways you can get rid of it. Along with Norton and Spybot, you should run other antispyware programs because not every program gets all the bad guys. It is highly recommended you run Ad-Aware from lavasoft.com On top of this, you should also try a system restore of your PC to a time before the infection.
If you can find out the name or any information about the file you ran, some google searching can help you find ways to fight this one. Because the spyware is launching Firefox, this seems to be a problem in windows and not just with IE. With that in mind, try to fight this on a system level by running scans, inspecting folders and checking firewall logs.
In the end you may need to reinstall Windows but that should be in extreme circumstances.

Hack: Burn CD’s and DVD’s on any computer.
A big thanks goes out to Alex who sent this in. Apparently if you need to burn a CD or DVD from a computer that has a burner, you can use yet another portable application to get the job done. Deep Burner allows you to burn CD’s, DVD’s, audio CD’s, ISO images and bootable disks. There is a pro version that can do much more but the free one gets all the basic items and of course you can run this directly from a USB thumb-drive. This program comes in handy if you need to do some burning on a friend’s computer or a work PC.
