The Geekcast contest!!!! Co-host the show!
As we reach the 100th episode of The Geekcast, there have tons of great moments and great listeners. To say thank you to everyone out there who supports the show, I have decided to start a contest.
If you are the big winner, you will get to co-host the show with me for two episodes where we can talk geek, hacking and more. Your voice will be heard by over 1,000 people and it will be a lot of fun!
Prizes:
The grand prize winner will receive:
An invitation to co-host two (2) episodes of The Geekcast via Skype.
A subscription to ID3 Podcast Magazine
A gift card to the iTunes Music Store for $10 (US)
The two runners-up will each receive a free subscription to ID3 Podcast Magazine.
What you need to do:
To enter the contest all you have to do is be the person who best promotes The Geekcast. The promotion can be in any form (audio comments to other shows, forum posts, handing out flyers, etc). As long as you get the word out there in the most creative way, you’re going to win.
Once you promote the show in your own way, send an e-mail to geekcast@gmail.com explaining your entry, showing links or inclusion of proof of your promotion, name, e-mail address, and phone number.
Deadline & Rules:
The deadline is 24 hours after episode 95 is published to The Geekcast podcast RSS feed. After this point, no entries will be accepted. While timing of episode 95 can vary, estimated time of episode is Wednesday, May 3, 2006. This day is ONLY an estimation and can come out at any point after episode 94. For whatever way you promote the show, please follow all laws and rules of the place/area/website you do this. Please do not spam message-boards or break the rules of any websites out there. Any entries that show spamming or flooding in an irresponsible manner, will render your entry void. All entries will be judged by The Geekcast host Aaron and all decisions are final. Winners will be announced no later than episode 98 of The Geekcast. All winners will be notified by e-mail or phone. Grand prize winner will be required to work around Aaron’s schedule, which is flexible but has restrictions. Co-hosting will be via Skype or other soft-VoIP application and not be in person. Grand prize winner will co-host two episodes of Aaron’s choosing, not to exceed episode 110. If a winner cannot accept their prize for whatever reason, they forfeit their prize, all winners move up one-spot and a new winner will be selected for third place. Void where prohibited, all rights reserved, take with food, may cause sexual side-effects.

Tech news:
Vista firewall to be shipped crippled. The firewall in Windows Vista will, by default, have half its protection turned off because that is what enterprise customers have requested, according to Microsoft. The firewall will be set to only block incoming traffic even though it will be capable of blocking outgoing traffic. Microsoft also claims that configuring the Vista firewall to block outgoing connections from rogue applications and malware will require a varying degree of technical knowledge, depending on each user’s security requirements.
EBay Launches Online Store to Sell Items. On Monday, eBay launched “eBay Express,” an online store to sell new items ranging from cookware and books to electronics — all with no bidding involved. The new store will feature a subset of items from merchants who already hawk new products at fixed prices on eBay. But unlike the regular eBay setup, purchased items from multiple sellers on eBay Express can all be placed into a single shopping cart, mirroring the checkout systems used by more conventional Internet shopping sites.
New TiVo boxes let users record two shows at once. TiVo said on Tuesday it will start to sell digital video recorders with dual tuners that allow users to record two television programs simultaneously. The new feature can help TiVo boxes compete against generic recorders provided by cable and satellite television operators, which are often distributed for free with a cable TV subscription and have dual tuners. TiVo said its new digital video recorder will be available May 1 and priced at $99.99 for 80 hours of recorded programs, after rebate and service activation.

How To: Scan for viruses for free on a mac.
A big thanks to Evan who sent this in.
Back in the days before OS X, the number of viruses which attacked Macintosh users totalled somewhere between about 60 and 80. Today, the number of viruses actively attacking OS X users is…NONE! However, this doesn’t mean we should get complacent about checking incoming email attachments or web downloads, for two reasons. Firstly, there’s no guarantee that we Mac users will continue to enjoy the status quo, but more importantly, the majority of the computing world use machines running MS Windows, for which an enormous quantity of viruses exist, so we must be vigilant in checking the files we pass on to our friends and colleagues etc. Enter ClamXav.
ClamXav is a free virus checker for Mac OS X. It uses the tried, tested and very popular ClamAV open source antivirus engine as a back end. This gives you the opportunity to avoid infected files altogether or at least copy and paste any vital information into a new document and send that instead. It runs well and best of all it’s free.
