Items of Note:

Mark, who co-hosted The Geekcast a few episodes ago, hit me up on Twitter to let everyone know that there is a Firefox extension that will vacuum the Firefox awesomebar. It will defragment your Firefox “Places” database, which greatly reduces the lag while typing in the address bar and the start-up time. This extension features configurable automatic cleaning, periodic reminder, and internationalization. Check it out at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13878.

Geek This Week:

Aaron: Bought a netbook on Woot on Monday…. just to cancel the order. After I made the purchase, Allen and Mark (who have co-hosted the show) both let me know the computer wasn’t worth it and it was under-powered. This was a Asus Eee PC 900 Netbook with Intel Mobile Processor for $149. Woot was good and sent me a cancelation confirmation within 24-hours and my search continues. I’m leaning toward either the Asus Eee PC that Gozer purchased or the Dell Mini 10. I have my Jolicloud ISO ready to go. In the meantime I installed it onto my Mac via Parallels to check it out. It seems pretty cool!

Gozer: Trying like hell to install joilcloud onto my netbook. I did the install to the usb drive but couldn’t get my 1005ha netbook to boot from the usb. Very frustrating. Probably just stick with xp.

Playin’ a ton of nazi zombies on de reise. Finally got far enough to get the pack a punch. Got up to 21. Horde mode on gears 2 is cake compared to this. The zombies are like the ones in 28 days later. In the later boards the hellhounds start randomly spawning with the zombies.

Special Edition Beatles 360 consoles being auctioned for charity

In celebration (and in a little extra last-minute promotion) for the release of The Beatles: Rock Band on Wednesday, Harmonix has announced that a limited number of special edition The Beatles: Rock Band-themed Xbox 360 consoles will be auctioned to raise money for Doctors Without Borders.

You can see the nifty looking 360 console above, which is plastered with decals recalling scenes from the deliriously awesome opening cinematic to the game (check it out here). The first console is up for auction right now on eBay, and since the current bid is $780, and since there are still 9 days and 4 hours until the auction ends on September 17, it looks like you better have deep pockets and a very giving heart if you hope to snag it. The press release assures that there will be other chances to purchase one of these consoles through auctions, although just how many were created wasn’t revealed.

‘It’s Only Rock and Roll’ Rumor Roundup

With Apple’s “It’s Only Rock and Roll” media event scheduled for tomorrow, months of rumors and speculation are coming together to generate a picture of what may be in store for the event.

New iPods with Camera

A report from mid-May was the first to suggest that the iPod touch and iPod nano would see the addition of digital cameras. Additional confirmation and mockup images of the next-generation iPod nano appeared shortly thereafter, and the new iPod nano is also rumored to carry a wider-aspect (1.5:1) screen ratio.

Over the past several months, a number of third-party case manufacturers have been advertising cases for the next-generation iPod touch and iPod nano designed to accommodate digital cameras on both models, as well as the new iPod nano screen size. Believable images claiming to be a prototype of the new iPod touch were also revealed last month:

Additional word appeared late last month that Apple has contracted for 3.2-megapixel cameras for not only the iPod touch and iPod nano, but also the iPod classic. Finally, iPod resellers have also reported dwindling stocks of existing iPod models and discontinuation of product codes for those models.

Last minute reports from multiple sources claim, however, that Apple has run into production problems with the cameras on the new models. While the issue may delay shipment of the new iPods, an introduction remains very likely for tomorrow’s event.

Final Fantasy XIII Aiming for Spring Western Release

Among the other announcements at Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII event, we also got a small hint of when it may come to the U.S. Or, at the very least, when Square wants it to come. Kotaku reports that company president Yoichi Wada recognizes that sometimes their releases take a while, and he’s looking to change that. “In the past, it’s taken a year or half a year to release our games abroad,” he said, “but this time we are aiming for an international release this Spring.” The Japanese version was confirmed to be due on December 17, which makes spring of 2010 a pretty tight window for all the localization work, not to mention porting the game to the Xbox 360. Stating the goal this far in advance might come back to bite Wada if they fail to meet it, but it’s good to hear they’re conscientious and trying to shorten up the historically long wait times.

Samsung’s LED TV Couple packs a 7-inch tablet remote for streaming TV and so much more

Without much fanfare, Samsung has released a TV / tablet combo in Korea that seems to deliver on all the untapped promise in Toshiba’s JournE touch tablet. Dubbed the LED TV Couple, Samsung has paired a 55-inch LED baclkit LCD TV with a brand new 7-inch touchscreen tablet, which communicates with and controls a full home theater over 802.11n WiFi. The tablet offers a visual program guide, including video previews of TV shows, along with access to media stored on a PC — which can in turn be “tossed” up to the full TV — and even a few widgets. But the real money is in the pair’s ability to stream live TV and Blu-ray content from the home theater to the tablet, making that next trip to the kitchen for munchies so much less painful. No word on a US or Europe release, but we hope to see a lot more of this pair in the near future. Peep them in action after the break.
