Geek This Week:
Aaron: Vacation completely unplugged! In the mountains of Massachusetts, there is no cell service with AT&T. It’s just like being at home! The time off was well-needed and the only electronics used were some iPhone games, my GPS and tons of hours in front of my Kindle.
I thought my iPhone keyboard has sounded very low since OS 3.1 came out. Well it looks like I am not alone! On Apple’s support forums I found the following post:
I spoke with apple today and they told me people were complaining that the click was too loud so they lowered it for 3.1. Now people are calling and complaining it’s to quiet. She thinks that the next update will correct this issue.

Apple: Console Makers Worry Over Apple’s Growing Competition
Posted by Soulskill on Saturday September 26, @11:57PM
The NY Times is running a story about the effect Apple is having on the console gaming market, making Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo worry that consumers will be satisfied playing games on devices that aren’t necessarily focused on gaming. Quoting:”The concerns highlight an accelerating shift away from hard-core games, which have traditionally driven console sales, to more casual ones played on cellphones. Of the 758 new game titles shown at the Tokyo Game Show, 168 were for cellphone platforms — more than twice as many as in the previous year. … Apple’s assault could even eat into sales of home consoles like Nintendo’s Wii, Sony’s PlayStation 3 or Microsoft’s XBox, as game-playing quickly becomes centered on cellphones. Many in the industry say that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft need to explore more radical changes to their businesses, including an emphasis on software rather than hardware and a better way for users to download games. ‘As a platform, the cellphone has the biggest potential, because everybody owns one,’ said Kazumi Kitaue, chief executive at another game maker, Konami Digital Entertainment. A family with three children might buy just one Wii or PlayStation to share, but those children will probably have cellphones of their own and download and play games, Mr. Kitaue said.”

webOS 1.2 now available, brings support for app purchases
The tips are flooding in — webOS 1.2.0 has just been released, and downloads are starting all over. Obviously the big new features is support for app purchases in the Catalog, but we’ve heard there are a ton of little fixes and improvements in addition — we’re checking it out now, let us know how it goes for you in comments!
Here are some major changes listed by Palm:
Search is now available in the email app, allowing you to find by subject, from, to, or CC fields (no message search yet).
The web browser now supports cut, copy, and paste within a webpage (text only).
Music purchases via Amazon can now be done over EV-DO. It’s not clear if they mean that you can download the tracks, or just queue them (that would be lame, however). Anyone test this yet?
A new gesture has been added which allows you to swipe down from the top of the screen to open the application or connection menu — which should be a huge help to everyone missing those small targets!
You can now download files from within the browser, and Palm has created an easy method to open a link in a new card.
Don’t expect to sync with iTunes, everyone — it ain’t happening.

No UMD Conversion Plan For PSPgo “At This Time”
“We were evaluating a UMD conversion programme, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the programme at this time,” an SCEA spokesperson told Kotaku.
The upcoming PSPgo doesn’t have a UMD drive, meaning owners of existing models that support disc-based games won’t be able to play their old titles on the new handheld.
While SCEE has moved to announce a European reward scheme enabling PSP owners upgrading to the new model to download three free titles, SCEA isn’t currently planning on rolling out the promotion in the US, according to IGN.

How To: Rip DVD’s Easily
Ripit is an extremely easy way to rip dvds to your mac hard drive without worrying about video codecs or bit rates. Instead it creates video_ts folders that exactly mimic a dvd’s structure and can be played back on whatever dvd player app you have. Everything that you rip will be intact menus, special features etc… On a downside, the resulting file will not play back on an ipod or iphone. You can, although, compress the files using handbrake which will then allow you to play them on such devices.
The process could not be easier. Go to ripitapp.com. Go to download free trial if you want to test it out. You get 10 free dvd rips! Or go to Buy in the upper right hand corner of the page. It will then bring you to a payment screen. Credit cards or paypal accpeted! You can buy the app for $20 or for a extra $10 get a family plan where you can use rip it on up to five computers!
Once you’ve downloaded the app, a small screen appears that prompts you to insert whatever dvd you want ripped to the hard drive. It literally took five minutes to rip to my hard drive with my 1.83 intel core duo processor and 2 gigs of ram. Once finished it saved to my movies folder with the little dvd player icon above the title. Then i right clicked on the icon and chose burn to dvd. I inserted a blank dvd and in less than 10 mins i had a copy.

The Geek’s View: Inglorious Basterds
Awesome movie. The main theme of the film is revenge. The film is set in an alternate history of the Second World War in which the entire top leadership of Nazi Germany, namely Hitler, Goering, Goebbels and Bormann attend a film premiere in Paris celebrating the exploits of a German sniper who had managed to kill 300 American soldiers in Italy. Most of the film’s timeframe is set in early June 1944, after the D-Day landings but before the liberation of Paris.
This movie has two plots that coincidently coincide with each other. You have one of the main characters, Shoshana, who owns a movie theater in Paris and you have the inglorious basterds who are both bent on killing nazis. This movie is violent but extremely funny at times as well. The tension that Tarantino builds is fascinating. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. Most of the scenes are just people sitting and talking! This movie is definitely not as violent as Kill Bill but in some ways i enjoyed it more than Kill Bill. The climax at the end is legendary and the audience applauded.
