Geek This Week:

Aaron:

I found a new obsessive game for my iPhone: Drop7. This game from Area Code Inc (http://www.areacodeinc.com/drop7/ (http://www.areacodeinc.com/drop7/)) is a tetris-like game that combines a drop aspect with numbers. You have to clear out columns and survive as long as possible. The bottom line: it's addicting as all hell. It's officially taken over as my time-suck, pulling that title away from iValet.

Also LOVING BetterTouchTool for my Apple Magic Mouse. This AWESOME utility (found at http://blog.boastr.net/ (http://blog.boastr.net/)) allows not just for expansion of the usable gestures but it also allows you to create custom gestures with a huge array of options. The best thing of all is that you can have program-specific gestures. For example, if I three-finger click while in Safari, I get a new tab with Google.com loaded. It's incredibly awesome and makes my mouse a thousand-times more useful. I will admit though that the gesture I wanted and use the most is the Apple-included two-finger swipe to navigate forward and back in Safari.

Gozer:

    Star Wars one man show.

Mass Effect 2. Yes i bought it. Couldn't really get into the first game but figured i would give this one a shot. I am definitely sucked in at this point. You play a commander Shepard, customize your character. Basically there are these reapers that are destroying human colonies throughout the galaxy and you have to investigate what is going on. This is an awesome sci-fi / roleplaying / action game. Role playing aspect i took a jack bauer approach. The action is similar to gears, great cover system. Squad based mechanics are awesome.

    Three words: Austrian Death Machine

Totally wanna make another music video for "Get to the Choppa" with video from Predator.

Nexus One update bringing pinch-to-zoom, Google Goggles, updated maps, T-Mobile 3G fix

You read that right, folks. The update to Google's Nexus One that was thought to just be a basic 3G fix instead has been loaded with other goodies, including:

Google Googles (Visual search - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhgfz0zPmH4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhgfz0zPmH4)) will now be baked into the ROM.
Google Maps is being updated to sync starred items and search suggestions with the desktop version, and it automatically switches to night mode in Navigation to make it easier to read.
The aforementioned 3G fix.
And pinch-to-zoom. Yes, multitouch in the browser, gallery and maps.

Keep an eye on your notifications bar, which is where you'll be alerted that the update is ready for you. Google says it will be rolled out gradually and that you might not get the update until the end of the week.

Geek This Week:

Aaron:

Project 365 / Pixelpipe. Using RSS feeds in iPhoto to keep things in sync.

Gozer:

Goin to see the one man shhhta wars show this weekend with shhhta wars dan, toots and chad. $15 not really expecting much but it is just an excuse to dress up and wield a lightsaber.

Still playin God of War 2, just killed icarus and took his wings. Can't get past the part where i have to get the scholar to read something in this other language.

Playin some Bayonetta. Nice to see the SEGA logo come up as the game starts up. Basically you are an umbra witch who fights angels. After killing these angels, they drop halos which are very reminiscent of the sonic rings. This game is insane, at first i couldn't tell what was going on, like devil may cry on crack. Got used to the controls and i actually like the controls better than devil may cry. And she also summons a demon made of hair.

And...converting alot of old analog vhs to digital which we will get to later.

Tech and Gaming News:

AT&T Insiders Report iPhone Exclusivity Going Away On Wednesday
Saturday, January 23, 2010 - by Shawn Oliver

It's sort of hard to believe that all the hype from CES is already over and done with. Larger companies spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to introduce and showcase new products at the show, and now all anyone wants to talk about in the tech world is Apple. Must be nice to be Steve Jobs (or an investor). The company that gave the world the iPod and iPhone is planning a media event on the 27th of this month, and while the world tends to believe a tablet or slate of some sort is planned, there has been no definite proof of that to this point.

We really have no idea what's next from Apple; we just know that it'll be something to unleash one's creative side according to a tagline in the invite. According to an inside source close to the going-ons involved in all of this, a new tablet of some sort may not be the only thing on deck for next Wednesday though. We have been led to believe by an inside source that AT&T will lose their iPhone exclusivity on the same day, though it's not yet clear what other carrier (or carriers) will be stepping in to also carry the phone. For anyone who has followed the saga, you may notice that you haven't seen AT&T fighting to extend their original exclusive agreement of late. In fact, they have spent most of their time fighting Verizon's negative ad campaign.

This may not be all that surprising. Inside of AT&T, we are hearing that the iPhone is causing more trouble than ever before. On some level, having the iPhone is hurting AT&T's image.</itunes:summary>

Tech and Gaming News:

It's on: Apple holding January 27th event to show off its 'latest creation'

Yes folks -- the rumors are true. Apple is holding an event on January 27th to show off something the company is calling their "latest creation." Hair standing on end? Good. The proceedings will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, and will get underway at 10AM Pacific. We'll be there live -- as usual -- covering every little second of the action... so get ready!

WSJ: Apple and HarperCollins negotiating e-book deal for tablet

Here's the skinny from The Wall Street Journal: major publishing company HarperCollins is in talks with Apple about bringing e-books to the oft-rumored, still-unconfirmed tablet that's expected to be the focus of its January 27th event. The article also states that other publishing companies have been in talks with Cupertino HQ. That jibes with what we've heard through the grapevine, specifically with Time Inc. property Sports Illustrated, and fits comfortably well with the New York Times conjecture from earlier today.</itunes:summary>

Topic:

2010 Tech Predictions:

-Christina: Mobile devices and digital geolocation apps

-Aaron: Apple Tablet Unicorn lives on, Android paces iPhone sales to become neck-and-neck race

-Allen: Android. Android. More Android. Phones/Netbooks/GPS/Multi-media Tablet. Frankly, I want Android to run my kitchen. On a more serious note, I think the trend will turn from netbooks, which really haven't done all that well, to 10" touchscreens (whether it's Apple or not). Portability will be taken to new heights.

Top Product of 2009:

Christina: Blu-Ray Player

Aaron: iPhone 3GS.

Allen: Google

Google 'Nexus One' phone. Possibly a hoax?

Feedback:

I gotta tell you I've been loving the tech tech heavy episodes. I can't recall the episode number, but it was the first I think, I remember listening and really enjoying when you started signing off. I thought you were going for a shorter run time with the new style, but I looked at the runtime on my ipod and it was almost a full hour. You guys were just so entertaining that it seemed like 10 minutes.

Geek This Week:

Aaron: Still working on my Mac mini offsite backup server with CarbonCopyCloner. I am unsure if it's going to work via the internet though because the remote mounting / automatic sharing seems to use internally assigned IP's. The plan will be to get the Mac set up offsite with the drive and then implement the solution remotely.

Facebook Passes Aol In The U.S.

by Erick Schonfeld on December 15, 2009

Just last week, Aol celebrated its re-emergence as an independently-traded company. But it’s one main advantage is that it still commands a large audience, and in fact was the fourth largest Website in the U.S.—until last month. ComScore data for November, 2009 shows that Facebook surpassed Aol with 102.9 million unique visitors in the U.S., versus 99.7 million for Aol.
Although Aol’s unique visitors grew by nearly a million since October, 2009, Facebook grew by more than 5 million. On an annual basis, Facebook’s U.S. audience grew 104 percent since November, 2008 (from 50.5 million visitors). During the same period, Aol’s audience declined by 8 percent. That decline is worrisome to Wall Street.

Facebook already passed Aol on a global basis back in February, 2009, and became the fourth largest site worldwide last summer when it became more popular than Wikipedia and the other Wkimedia Foundation sites. How long before Facebook catches up to Microsoft’s 136 million U.S. visitors, Yahoo’s 160 million U.S. visitors, or Google’s 168 million U.S. visitors?
Or can Tim Armstrong turn the tide and regain AOL’s standing in the Web firmament?

Android Market Hits 20,000 Apps

Google doesn’t disclose Android Market figures, but AndroLib and others track what apps are added and at what rate. Looking at the different statistics, it’s clear Android development is on the rise.Although the iPhone’s App Store is still king, the Android Market is growing fast. According to AndroLib, the online store has just reached the 20,000 mark, doubling in size in the last five months.

Given the success of the Droid, November was unsurprisingly the biggest month for both new apps in the English language Android Market, and also the biggest gain month over month.

New Super Mario Bros Wii hits big in Japan: bricks record, collects coin

by Alexander Sliwinski { 3 hours ago }

Old-school Mario is news again as New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold at Sonic-speed throughout its Japanese launch last week. Andriasang reports that the platformer sold 422,000 copies in its first day (December 3), with Famitsu following up that NSMB Wii moved 936,734 units by Sunday, December 6, its "first week" at retail, stomping the previous week-one sales record held by Super Smash Bros. AT&T's new iPhone app conveys your disappointment in real time

OK, so the bigwigs at AT&T and Verizon have learned to make nice (for the time being at least), but what's a hapless iPhone user to do about dropped calls and other network problems? The AT&T Mark The Spot app offers long-suffering (or even the intermittently bedeviled) customers the ability to ping their carrier in real time, with location-specific feedback, should one experience a coverage crisis. To begin registering your gripes, hit the source link and download away!

Geek This Week:

Aaron:

Didn't Black Friday shop but went shopping on Saturday to get a whole bunch of stuff. Picked up Super Mario Bros. for the Wii and I'll be sure to give that a try later on this week. Found a fantastic iPhone app called ShopSavy that scans barcodes. It will then check all prices online along with local stores using the iPhone's location, which is awesome. It shows reviews and lets you save items to check later. A fantastic app and it's free! It's a total must-have for the holiday shopper.

Gozer:

Had a great thanksgiving, played modern warfare 2 local multiplayer free for all death match with my wife's family. Really alot more fun playing with people next to you than over live. My father in law and uncle in law stayed up all night to go to wal mart to get $80 cameras and 50 AA for $9. They stayed up all night researching!!!

Playin a ton of New Super Mario Bros. Havin alot of fun playin it with my wife. We are on world 8 and these worlds get increasingly harder. Also playing it single player, alot easier to get through but it is fun to have the co-op experience. The cool thing about co-op is you pretty much have infinite lives and continues. Everytime someone dies they can come back when the level is over +5 lives. If you both die on the same level with no lives left then the game is over and you will revert back to your last game save.

Tried out the new Scene It. Not really that impressed. NO avatar support like the last game and NO ONLINE PLAY!! very disappointing. They have this thing where you select stereotypical hollywood characters as your avatars, to choose these avatars then start the game is a pain in the ass. It almost seems more like a game show then a movie trivia game. There is this host that follows you around and tells you what is going on. Also, i am still not sure about this, you earn stars at the end of each round and you can use these stars to get a points multiplier for the next round. If you miss getting this multiplier, it will go to another player. Lots of current movies than classic movies in this version. I believe warner brothers picked up this new version.

Nook ship date slips to January 11th, supply chain managers weep

Hardware construction is a funny thing. Sometimes, regardless of the money you throw at something, you just can't get products to come together any quicker. Evidently that's the case with Barnes & Noble's Nook, which has seen its estimated ship date slip from today to sometime after the holidays, and now to January 11th. There's still a sliver of hope that you'll be able to snag one from a high-traffic retail location on December 7th, but unless you're planning on abandoning ship and helping the Kindle have its new best month ever, the realistic choices are pretty clear: a) pay Tickle Me Elmo-like prices on eBay or b) drop an IOU in a nicely wrapped box, preferably with a cute puppy. We suggest the latter.

Feedback: Russell talks to us about his favorite applications:

Defraggler
Use Defraggler to defrag your entire hard drive, or individual files - unique in the industry. This compact and portable Windows application supports NTFS and FAT32 file systems.

and

CCleaner
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)

Tech and Gaming News:

Google to track TiVo viewing habits

Google and TiVo know you accidentally watch a few ads while fast-forwarding through the commercial breaks of your recorded programs, and they'd like a little more data to back that up.

Google plans to add TiVo "television viewing data" to its existing Google TV Ads program, the two companies said in a press release Tuesday. Google TV Ads is the company's attempt to re-create its AdWords and AdSense model on the small screen through a partnership with Dish Network, and it wants to use TiVo data to help its advertising clients measure how and when their ads are viewed.

DVRs like TiVo are not the favorite tech product of the television advertising business, as they allow viewers to watch shows whenever they like and skip the commercials. But most DVR owners (except for a few masters of the remote control) catch glimpses of ads as they whiz by, or overshoot the end of the commercial period and hit the 30-second rewind button, exposing them to the last ad shown before the program resumes.

That kind of viewing shouldn't count as a full ad impression, since the advertiser knows the viewer didn't watch the full ad, but Google seems to feel that it can't be completely ignored, either. It plans to use "anonymous second-by-second DVR viewing data" to track how viewers see ads placed through Google TV Ads. It also gives Google more access to viewer behavior on sources outside of Dish Network, including cable, satellite, and over-the-air viewers.

That could presumably make Google TV Ads more attractive to potential advertisers, since Google will be able to assemble a wealth of data on the viewing habits of DVR owners. Google also has a deal with Nielsen for viewing data, although some feel the new TiVo partnership will put a lot of strain on that relationship. In a somewhat related move, TiVo has also partnered with MillerCoors to expose football fans to Coors Light ads when they are fast-forwarding through recorded NFL games.

Geek This Week:

Aaron: Fall TV: Stargate Universe, FlashForward, Fringe. WTF happened w/ my interest in Dollhouse? It's canceled anyhow and Chuck comes back in January!

Gozer: Modern Warfare 2:

Single player - Airport level? Controversial? I love the missions on american soil especially defending burger town. I think it is better than COD 4. Every mission is like WOW, i just love looking around and enjoying the view. The last mission i played really made me feel a bit emotional like this can't be happening. Totally effective in making you feel something instead of just running around shooting people.

Spec Ops: Played a bit co-op tried some levels in alpha. Bridge level, horde mode snow level & stealth snow level.

Multiplayer: Really enjoying multiplayer. They've added soooo much as far as killstreaks. In COD 4 there were only a few killstreaks. UAV's , helicopters and some sort of bombs.

This time you have:

3 Kills - UAV
4 Kills - Care Package
4 Kills - Counter UAV
5 Kills - Sentry Gun
5 Kills - Predator Missile
6 Kills - Precision Airstrike
7 Kills - Strike
7 Kills - Attack Heli
8 Kills - Emergency Airdrop
9 Kills - Pave Low
9 Kills - Stealth Bomber
11 Kills - Chopper Gunner
11 Kills - AC-130
15 Kills - EMP
25 Kills - Tactical Nuke

Deathstreaks are awesome. You are rewarded for dying 3 times! IF you die 3x you can steal an enemies weapons to hopefully give you an advantage.

Guns of choice: Scar with red dot sight or holographic. AA shotgun. Still don't like the Acog sight. Alot people playin sayin they love it. The sight is just too big and cuts off your vision.

New Super Mario Bros Wii:

Totally old school. This game is almost like it came after super mario land for snes. I was a bit apprehensive about multiplayer on a 2-d platformer but it works really well. Anyone who started in the 8bit era and skipped over everything else, could easily pick up this game and feel completely comfortable. Alot of throw backs to the original games along with some new things.

There are some new suits including: twirly hat suit thing, shrinking mushroom that gives you crazy speed and a penguin outfit. If your partners or partners die than they return to the screen in this bubble thing where you have to pop them in order for them to get back in the game. Also you can pick each other up, for example, my wife was having trouble with this one part so i just picked her up and finished the level.

My wife and i played and Trauma was coming on last night, it was about 8:50, and i said why don't we stop and she said no lets keep playing the tivo is recording it. You know right before you go to sleep you say i love you and all that crap? My wife actually turned over to me and said i loved playing mario with you today.

Apple & Creative Announce Settlement. Apple and Creative announced a broad settlement ending all legal disputes between the two companies. Apple will pay Creative $100 million for a paid-up license to use Creative's recently awarded patent in all Apple products. Apple can recoup a portion of its payment if Creative is successful in licensing this patent to others. In addition Creative has joined Apple's "Made for iPod" program and will be announcing their own iPod accessory products later this year. Steve Jobs, commenting about the settlement said "Creative is very fortunate to have been granted this early patent."

14-year-old girl sues friend over missing iPod. A missing iPod resulted in a lawsuit in Wheaton, Illinois, when 14-year-old Shannon Derrik sued her friend Stephanie Eick for losing her brand new iPod. Shannon lent her iPod to Stephanie, who decided it'd be a good idea to give back the iPod by leaving it on Shannon's desk rather than waiting for her to return from the restroom to hand it over in person, and at that point the iPod went missing. Shannon has sued for $475 in damages and court fees.

Apple updated Battery Exchange Program iBook G4 and PowerBook G4. The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4.

The affected models include:

12-inch iBook G4 A1061 ZZ338 - ZZ427 3K429 - 3K611 6C519 - 6C552 ending with S9WA, S9WC or S9WD

15-inch PowerBook G4 A1078 and A1148 3K425 - 3K601 6N530 - 6N551 ending with THTA, THTB, or THTC 6N601 ending with THTC

Cox DVR's getting converted to TiVo's. TiVo has entered into an agreement to make TiVo’s service available to select Cox subscribers. Under the terms of the agreement, TiVo will customize its cable software for deployment on compatible Cox DVR set-top-boxes. TiVo’s downloadable software will allow Cox to deliver the TiVo(R) service in Cox subscriber homes without replacing existing DVR boxes, and without an install appointment. In this way, current Cox DVR customers who wish to enjoy the award-winning TiVo service, can quickly and easily add the benefits of TiVo to their DVR subscription.

Microsoft adds 'one-click' sex offender report tool. Young people using Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger to chat online with friends can now make a report to police with one click if they are concerned their online 'buddy' is a sex offender. Feedback:

Aaron, I just listened to your show from Saturday about Google. Wave, which is when I got my access to Wave. I wanted to let you know 2 things. First, when I created my account I did get a new wave address (******@googlewave.com), so with a new address it may be possible to protect your information. Second, I tried opening wave on my ipod and got an error message that the browser was not supported. Have you had any luck?

Virtualization:

1. New version of VMware Fusion 3.0 for Mac - All new features here: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-10957 -- **My favorites are below**
        - Now runs natively in 64-bit in Snow Leopard
        - Key features: Full support of Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit) including Aero mode -- ALSO full support for 10.6 Snow Leopard Server
        - Advanced 3D graphics (saw example of them running Flight Simulator X [FSX] and it looked incredible. It's a very graphics-intense game.)
        - Faster loading/suspend states
        - Comes with preinstalled VirtualMachine Tools (oddly there was one for Mac OS!)
        - Reduced memory usage for Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows XP that were created in THIS version of Fusion
        - Remote into virtual machines with use of integrated VNC

2. Is this the version that kills off native 'local' desktop computing? I feel most computing should be done in VM's. Will explain.
        - Snapshots become a true system restore
        - Most PC users do NOT game hardcore, therefore no reason for super graphics card
        - Because this version supports 1080p video, if there is for some reason a codec that the Mac doesn't have, videos can be watched in HD in Fusion 3.0
        - Additional firewall protection due to IP address masking
        - Now can run multiple servers from single machine (i.e. media server, database server, dhcp server, etc.)

3. Competition: Parallels and Sun's VirtualBox. Also VMware available to run natively on PC's. Will explain positives and negatives of Mac VM competitors.

4. Disappointing 27" iMac news: Video input can only be done for devices which currently have DisplayPort's...which are virtually none. It cannot accept RCA/HDMI/VGA. I will not be purchasing one :-(</itunes:summary>

The contest begins today and ends on Wednesday, November 4th! To enter, send an e-mail to geekcast@gmail.com with your name, e-mail address and home town.

"Tailored to the most hard-core Star Trek fans, Mind Meld gets you up close and personal with the stars of the original television series. Its premise? Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner sitting together and having a quiet, earthy chat about old times. There isn't much new information about the show--though old cast resentments are addressed--but viewers learn a great deal about the personal lives of everyone's favorite spacemen. The two discuss the pressures of filming a weekly show and the difficulties of maintaining one's dignity as an actor while wearing pointy ears. The personalities of both men shine through and it becomes obvious why they were cast as they were; Nimoy really is more thoughtful and reserved, while Shatner is extroverted and showy. The best part of Mind Meld is witnessing the genuine fondness the two men share for each other. It's clear that they really were (and are) best friends, even when the cameras stopped rolling." --Ali Davis

This contest is only open to U.S. residents and you must have existing iTunes account.

Geek This Week:

Aaron:

I ran down memory lane as I heard that Yahoo is closing Geocities on October 26th. Now I haven't been to the site in forever but it reminded me that I still have my old page there that covered the TV series Sliders. Geocities was a place that helped me learn HTML and it's an integral part to the early beginnings of the internet. I'll be sure to log in for one last time and download all the files so they aren't lost for all time.

Thinking of changing my current backup scheme to a different setup. I currently use Time Machine with two drives, one of which I keep off-site. I currently swap the drives once every 5-6 months and then I also have Backup copy my documents & vital files to MobileMe. I've heard a lot lately about Time Machine not being as reliable as Apple would have us think, so this combined with the recent Sidekick data fail makes has me re-thinking my backup scheme. I'm looking into Carbon Copy Cloner and also Super Duper but I also need offsite backup. Any suggestions?

Gozer:

Had a brief hands on with the new PSP Go. Really awesome device. Really small and sleek. Maybe Sony should have come out with this from the get go. I like the fact that all your games would be on the hard drive or a memory stick instead of UMD's. But it's a little too late. Not that I play a lot of my old UMD's but I cannot justify buying a device that is $250 and that can't play your library of UMD's!</itunes:summary>

Geek This Week:

Aaron: Tried Gmail push on my iPhone via Google Sync and their exchange setup. Talk about epic fail. For the first 20 minutes my inbox showed ALL mail that had come in within the past 3 days, even if it was archived or deleted. Then while looking through it further, I come to find out that if you delete a message from your inbox, Gmail archives it!?!? Talk about confusing. These hiccups combined with the battery drain took me right back to the tried-and-true GPush and IMAP setup.

Allen: AT&T may be allowing VoIP on the iPhone.

Gmail also hit by e-mail phishing scheme

Hotmail users aren't the only ones who've been hit by a phishing scheme over the past week. Google told BBC News on Tuesday that Gmail users have also been affected by the hackers who posted passwords online.

The problem is far more widespread than was disclosed on Monday, possibly affecting Yahoo and AOL e-mail accounts as well, according to BBC News.

Google described the issue as an "industrywide phishing scheme,</itunes:summary>

Geek This Week:

Aaron: Vacation completely unplugged! In the mountains of Massachusetts, there is no cell service with AT&T. It's just like being at home! The time off was well-needed and the only electronics used were some iPhone games, my GPS and tons of hours in front of my Kindle.

I thought my iPhone keyboard has sounded very low since OS 3.1 came out. Well it looks like I am not alone! On Apple's support forums I found the following post:

I spoke with apple today and they told me people were complaining that the click was too loud so they lowered it for 3.1. Now people are calling and complaining it's to quiet. She thinks that the next update will correct this issue.

Apple: Console Makers Worry Over Apple's Growing Competition

Posted by Soulskill on Saturday September 26, @11:57PM

The NY Times is running a story about the effect Apple is having on the console gaming market, making Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo worry that consumers will be satisfied playing games on devices that aren't necessarily focused on gaming. Quoting:"The concerns highlight an accelerating shift away from hard-core games, which have traditionally driven console sales, to more casual ones played on cellphones. Of the 758 new game titles shown at the Tokyo Game Show, 168 were for cellphone platforms — more than twice as many as in the previous year. ... Apple's assault could even eat into sales of home consoles like Nintendo's Wii, Sony's PlayStation 3 or Microsoft's XBox, as game-playing quickly becomes centered on cellphones. Many in the industry say that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft need to explore more radical changes to their businesses, including an emphasis on software rather than hardware and a better way for users to download games. 'As a platform, the cellphone has the biggest potential, because everybody owns one,' said Kazumi Kitaue, chief executive at another game maker, Konami Digital Entertainment. A family with three children might buy just one Wii or PlayStation to share, but those children will probably have cellphones of their own and download and play games, Mr. Kitaue said."

The tips are flooding in -- webOS 1.2.0 has just been released, and downloads are starting all over. Obviously the big new features is support for app purchases in the Catalog, but we've heard there are a ton of little fixes and improvements in addition -- we're checking it out now, let us know how it goes for you in comments!

Here are some major changes listed by Palm:

Search is now available in the email app, allowing you to find by subject, from, to, or CC fields (no message search yet).
The web browser now supports cut, copy, and paste within a webpage (text only).

Geek This Week:

Aaron:

After giving the netbook lots of thought and really thinking what I would do with it, I have decided to pass on purchasing the computer. The two biggest factors are that I wouldn't have a use for it outside of my house (where I have my much more powerful iMac) and also I have an iPhone. My iPhone does everything a netbook does AND it fits in my pocket. I realized I have Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, web, music and tons more on me at all times.

Gozer:

My little cousin got an xbox with call of duty world at war. Played for about four hours saturday night. Luckily my wife had plans with her friends and she was out late! Got a bit into the multiplayer more. The big problem i had with modern warfare multiplayer was that if i played with friends i couldn't tell where they were. Gears is much easier because it is a smaller scale action game and easier to keep track of where people are. World at War somewhat solves this by recognizing who you are in a party with and will highlight your friends names in people so it's easy to distinguish them from other people you're playing with. Fantastic idea.

Still playing Arkham Asylum. Really enjoying the pacing of the game. Switches up the gameplay from detective mode to fighting to stealth. There is an awesome sequence with scarecrow somewhat early on in the game. You have to investigate the morgue and all these voices start talking to you. In surround sound this kinda started to freak me out a little bit. Then the morgue is torn apart into this alternate dimension looking arkham that is floating in space. In the middle of you navigating around is a huge scarecrow searching for you. Awesome wow moements like this really make this game incredible. Tried out some of the challenge modes. Did the stealth mode where you have to k.o. 6 guys secretly. I knocked out 2 guys near the glass floor, then i laced the glass floor with explosive gel. 3 other guys came over to investigate to guys i just knocked out and i was just watching and waiting until they al got onto the glass floor. When they did, i detnated the gel and took out 3 guys at once. Awesome.

Rented Halo ODST and Beatles Rock Band. Haven't played it yet. Halo ODST has 4 player coop and you play as just some regular dude instead of master chief. There is also a separate disc for multiplayer and firefight which seems like a more intelligent version of gears 2 horde mode. There is also no teabagging in firefight.

Aaron:

The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Still netbook shopping.

Gozer:

Was sick all weekend. COD world at war...actually played the story mode! Really awesome. Did get up to level 28 on nazi zombie mode. Used the pack a punch to power up the ray gun and the magnum. Just got to the point where my wife was yelling, " Are you gonna come up to spend time with me?" I left at 28 and everyone else wound up dying.

( Mahhk will be very happy) Went into blockbuster not expecting any good games for rent. Got Batman Arkum Asylum. The game is beautiful and has one of the best intros ever. I felt like I was on a ride at universal studios. The joker is being taken away in one of these hannibal lectur contraptions. Makin his comments all the while. You meet killer croc his is transported via elevator and he wants to eat your bones. Scary dude. I was thinkin wow i hope that electric collar he's got on works. The environments are gorgeous and the fighting is alot of fun. There's detective mode, ex) batman follows a crooked guard by following the alcohol that he just consumed.

Ended my netflix. I just figured i go to blockbuster all the time for my games i mine as well get the blockbuster online so i can return mailed movies to the store and pick up new ones for free. ( i think 5 free in store exchanges) I never really used the streaming netflix so what's the difference between that and blockbuster? at least now i can go to the store and get free movies along with my mailed ones.

Scribblenauts Word Count Higher Than Reported

Over the weekend, a hacker seemed to prove that there are exactly 22,802 words in Scribblenauts. Not true, the game's creative director told Fast Company.
An online article quotes Jeremiah Slaczka, creative director at game development studio 5th Cell, told the outlet that the the weekend word count report missed some words:

"That was leaked by a hacker who does not know anything. It's more than that," Slaczka said. Scribblenauts, which will be out tomorrow on the Nintendo DS, offers players a couple of hundred 2D platforming and puzzle challenges, all of which can be solved using objects, people and creatures that the player writes into the game. The game was programmed to recognize and render as many kid-safe, non-trademarked names as possible. Most proper names were excluded as well. No Batman and no naughty words. But it does have everything from dog to gun to god.

Eidos Details First Batman DLC Pack
"Insane Night" to include a new Combat and Predator challenge map.

Eidos has given official details for the first of two planned free downloadable content packs for Batman: Arkham Asylum. We already knew the one scheduled for this Thursday is titled "Insane Night," but now the reason why is becoming clear. Kotaku reports that it consists of two new maps. "Totally Insane" combat challenge places Batman in the Records Room against scores of the lunatic enemies. The "Nocturnal Predator" map is (simply enough) a predator challenge that seems to take place on the Arkham grounds. The other pack, "Prey in the Darkness," is also likely to consist of two maps and should be coming September 24,</itunes:summary>

Mark, who co-hosted The Geekcast a few episodes ago, hit me up on Twitter to let everyone know that there is a Firefox extension that will vacuum the Firefox awesomebar. It will defragment your Firefox "Places" database, which greatly reduces the lag while typing in the address bar and the start-up time. This extension features configurable automatic cleaning, periodic reminder, and internationalization. Check it out at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13878 (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13878).

Geek This Week:

Aaron: Bought a netbook on Woot on Monday.... just to cancel the order. After I made the purchase, Allen and Mark (who have co-hosted the show) both let me know the computer wasn't worth it and it was under-powered. This was a Asus Eee PC 900 Netbook with Intel Mobile Processor for $149. Woot was good and sent me a cancelation confirmation within 24-hours and my search continues. I'm leaning toward either the Asus Eee PC that Gozer purchased or the Dell Mini 10. I have my Jolicloud ISO ready to go. In the meantime I installed it onto my Mac via Parallels to check it out. It seems pretty cool!

Gozer: Trying like hell to install joilcloud onto my netbook. I did the install to the usb drive but couldn't get my 1005ha netbook to boot from the usb. Very frustrating. Probably just stick with xp.

Playin' a ton of nazi zombies on de reise. Finally got far enough to get the pack a punch. Got up to 21. Horde mode on gears 2 is cake compared to this. The zombies are like the ones in 28 days later. In the later boards the hellhounds start randomly spawning with the zombies.

Tech and Gaming News:

Special Edition Beatles 360 consoles being auctioned for charity

In celebration (and in a little extra last-minute promotion) for the release of The Beatles: Rock Band on Wednesday, Harmonix has announced that a limited number of special edition The Beatles: Rock Band-themed Xbox 360 consoles will be auctioned to raise money for Doctors Without Borders.

You can see the nifty looking 360 console above, which is plastered with decals recalling scenes from the deliriously awesome opening cinematic to the game (check it out here). The first console is up for auction right now on eBay, and since the current bid is $780, and since there are still 9 days and 4 hours until the auction ends on September 17, it looks like you better have deep pockets and a very giving heart if you hope to snag it. The press release assures that there will be other chances to purchase one of these consoles through auctions, although just how many were created wasn't revealed.

'It's Only Rock and Roll' Rumor Roundup

With Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" media event scheduled for tomorrow, months of rumors and speculation are coming together to generate a picture of what may be in store for the event.

New iPods with Camera

A report from mid-May was the first to suggest that the iPod touch and iPod nano would see the addition of digital cameras. Additional confirmation and mockup images of the next-generation iPod nano appeared shortly thereafter,</itunes:summary>

CJ from California writes: The new Snow Leopard OS is really nice and I'm excited about the 64-bit ability. Hopefully Apple will do their best to make sure everything is compatible.

Dan from New Jersey writes: While $30 is a no-brainer of an upgrade, I don't think Apple can really charge more for just a large maintenance update. I'll get it though.

Phil from Boston writes: Snow Leopard is really, really fast! I gained about 7gig back in harddrive space.

Dave from Calgary writes: Leopard was great and Snow Leopard looks like it will be a good competitor to Windows 7.

Our thoughts and impressions of Mac OS 10.6, Snow Leopard. To see if your software is compatible with Snow Leopard, check out http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ (http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/). Apple also adjusted how they report free space from binary to base-10. To learn more about this, see TUAW's great article http://www.tuaw.com/2009/08/29/snow-leopard-the-new-one-gigabyte-now-slimmer-than-before/ (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/08/29/snow-leopard-the-new-one-gigabyte-now-slimmer-than-before/).

Gozer:

Got back last tuesday from our trip to cally. Stayed in Malibu, Encino and hotels in Bel Air and San Fran. Drove around in our awesome 2010 red mustang convertible. Keeping it geeky...i saw 3 awesome apple stores. The first in Santa Barabara, 2 floors with big open doors to the main street. Another in The Grove which is right next to the farmers market. Also went to the farmer's market and saw people walking around with price is right stickers on. CBS studios was right there. Turns out they were all outta tickets. Went to hollywood got my pic next to Ivan Reitman's star on the walk of fame. Ate at an in n out burger. Did the 8 hour drive to san fran. Stopped about half way to Heartz Castle. This is the home of William Randolph Heartz who was a newspaper tycoon and gold rush millionare. Definitely worth the trip. This guy had a movie theater in his house! One that would rival that of a real theater. Citizen Cane was based on Heartz. Got to San Fran around midnight. Took a hike through muir woods. Did a 2 day bus tour of San Fran. Saw another beautiful apple store in the city. Rode on an electric bus for $2. Flew back and enjoyed The Wire season 5 and scrabble on the psp.

Netbook sales growth doubles laptops in Q2 '09

While it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise given the fairly steady growth netbooks have seen since their inception as a product category, it's still pretty notable that they've apparently now managed to nearly double traditional laptops in sales growth during the second quarter of this year. That word comes from market research firm DisplaySearch, which found that netbook shipments grew an impressive 40% compared to the same quarter last year, as opposed to 22% for plain old laptops. As excitingly illustrated in the chart above, however,</itunes:summary>

Tech and Gaming News:

Apple to ship Mac OS X Snow Leopard Aug. 28

Apple will ship its newest operating system to customers a little earlier than expected. The company said Monday that Mac OS X Snow Leopard will be available this Friday, August 28. Apple made it clear from the beginning that Snow Leopardwas not as much about adding new features as it was about refining the code in the operating system. For instance, according to Apple, 90 percent of the Mac OS X code has been worked on for the Snow Leopard release. This isn't just application code, it also includes working on the Finder, making it more responsive.

Apple says that Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is half the size of the previous operating system and frees up to 7GB of drive space once installed. No doubt this has to do with the refinements in the operating system, but Snow Leopard also only supports Macs with an Intel-based processors, not the older PowerPC processors. As for speed increases in Snow Leopard, Apple said that its Mail application loads messages twice as fast, Time Machine does its initial backup 80 percent faster, and the included 64-bit version of Safari is up to 50 percent faster.

Snow Leopard also supports Exchange Server 2007. This means that you can use Mac OS X Mail, Address Book and iCal out of the box with Exchange.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard will cost $29 as an upgrade for Leopard users. For Mac OS X Tiger users, the Mac Box Set, which includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife '09 and iWork '09, will cost $169.

Sony to link readers with libraries, allow e-book borrowing

At a press event at the New York Public Library, Sony announced that its Reader hardware will soon be able to read digital books "borrowed" from local libraries, with a 21-day expiration date. By the holidays, the Reader lineup will be joined by a 3G-enabled wireless reader with a seven-inch screen.

At a press event hosted by the New York Public Library, Sony put their recently announced Reader hardware on display and provided an overview of its recent announcements. But the event was more than simply a recap of past announcements. The library location provided context for a program, which will be run through Sony's e-book store, which will allow users to identify their local public library borrow books through its site. There was also new hardware: by the holidays, Sony plans on having a 3G-enabled Reader with a tall seven-inch screen.

The upcoming hardware was called the Reader Daily Edition, which implies partnerships with news outlets. However, aside from the price and 3G capabilities, almost nothing was mentioned about the device.</itunes:summary>

Geek This Week:

Aaron:

I saw District 9 on Tuesday afternoon and it was really interesting. The movie has not seen lots of hype from advertising and seems to be gaining traction from word of mouth, ALA Star Trek. The movie decimated the box office last week with $37 million in ticket sales, pushing off the (why on earth would you pay to see this garbage) movie GI Joe. District 9 is directed by Peter Jackson and seems to have roots with the Halo backstory. Word on the street is that Jackson was working on a Halo movie and for whatever reasons it was scrapped in favor of District 9. Without giving anything away, the movie focuses on aliens that live here on Earth after their ship encountered problems. It is shot in a half-action / half-documentary style that makes it both fun and interesting. The special effects are top-notch and the story really evokes emotion, which is rare for a scifi movie. Overall, this movie is best movie to come out since Star Trek.

Also this week I've been geeking out to Big Bang Theory from Netflix. I was only able to get the first disc of the first season and that is unfortunate because this show is great!! The six episodes went by really quick and even my wife enjoyed it. The show features two geeky guys that live in an apartment together and of course the good-looking (and single) woman moves in across the hall. Where this show differs from 'formula' TV is that the writers are quick, witty, and really appeal to geek humor and how it's seen by outsiders. There isn't 'technobabble' that makes no sense and you even see some of the embarrassment they feel as the two main characters interact with everyone else. I'm excited for the next disc to come!

Tech and Gaming News:

Apple Keynote Event Scheduled for Early September?

MediaMemo reports on claims from music industry sources that Apple is planning a keynote event for the week of September 7th. Multiple music industry sources say Apple executives have told them the company is planning one of its famed keynote events for the week of Sept. 7.

But in true Apple fashion, the company has been noncommittal about the exact date of the event and what it will be showing off. Given the apparent inside information held by media executives, the report suggest that the event may highlight Apple's rumored "Cocktail" iTunes album enhancements.

Given that Apple has tipped off music industry executives, it’s a fair bet that the event will incorporate music in some way. Perhaps it will show off the new “Cocktail” format that Apple has been working on, which bundles full-length albums with other goodies like album covers and interactive bells and whistles.iPod updates are another likely possibility, with evidence pointing to the possibility of revised iPod touch and nano models offering built-in cameras. Rumors of Blu-ray support, iPhone app organization and social media integration in iTunes 9 are another possible topic of discussion for the event.</itunes:summary>
