Feedback:

Hi Aaron,

It is sad to see that Gozer had to cancel his Blockbuster Game membership for his Droid. However I would like to mention a game trading site named Goozex.com.
I have been a member of this site and in around 8 months done over 100 trades (sending and relieving). They guarantee your trade, it has a good community and their decisions are community driven. Also the games are very well priced and their value fluctuate according to supply and demand.
I hope Gozer continues his gaming at the same speed he was before he got the droid.

Love the show,

Akash

Hey Guys!

Not sure if you have heard but Bungie has been rumored to Jump from XBOX 360 to the Playstation 3.
They say they will not be doing a Halo for Playstation 3 but I am sure Sony will push for it.

Also Richard Branson was on a BBC show the last and was talking about his new venture. It Virgin Media
Online the idea is that XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 owners will be able to play against each other online.
There will be prizes and people will be able to play for money, he has also rumored that there is a possibility
of winning a trip to space!

Love the Show

Geek This Week:

Gozer: My Gadgets! Made a movie with my camcorder. Took some awesome shots with my SLR in Maine. Went to coos canyon, stood on a bridge and took pics of my friends jumping about 25 to 30 feet into the water filled canyon. Android phone. Telephoto lens came in very handy.
Listened to 2 audiobooks on the way up to Maine. Olivia Munn's Suck it Wonder Woman and Extra Lives: Why video games matter. by Tom Bissell.

Aaron: Checking out GeekTool to customize my desktop. Also was able to pick up the Handy Light before Apple pulled it! If you happened to see the show's Twitter stream, you saw me urging people to get it before the Big 'A' yanked it.

Tech and Gaming News:

How a 15-yo Kid Tricked Apple With a Disguised iPhone Tethering App

Oh, Nick Lee, you clever boy you. See, Nick here tricked Apple with a very simple iPhone application: Handy Light. On the surface it looked just like any other $0.99 flashlight application. But, secretly, it was a lot more useful.

Handy Light allowed you to make your iPhone's screen go blank with a color of your choice. You opened it, clicked a swatch from a simple palette, and that was it: Life in technicolor. Another stupid flashlight application like a hundred others. Or so the App Store team thought.

Inside, the app contained hidden code that made it a full tethering application—a program that allows you to use your iPhone as a 3G modem. Using this ability you can surf the web from your computer, using the iPhone as a bridge to the internet. You can do this using your iPhone's preferences too, but that way you will have to pay the additional $20 per month that AT&T wants you to pay for this kind of service. That is $20 extra on top of whatever you are paying for your iPhone data plan. With Handy Light, the tethering service was completely free.

It worked beautifully: You just needed to set up a Wi-Fi network in your laptop,</itunes:summary>

Canon HF M31 Camcorder 32g internal memory and media reader. Uses SD cards.

Enjoying PS3. Discovered there is an awesome GB theme on the blu ray. Also there are alot of awesome free themes @

Downloaded a BTTF theme, there was a DeLorean as a background but when i downloaded it there was nothing! Just BTTF! Theme isn't that great. I gotta make my own.

Aaron: Loving the small updates Google makes to Google Voice. They now added the ability to listen to a voicemail within the HTML 5 applet instead of having to tap on 'play' and then getting the Quicktime player on the iPhone. Inline playing makes for a better experience.

I'm also back to rocking out on Flight Control. Scored 981 on the new 'Windy' level.

Tech and Gaming News:

Borders' Kobo-powered eBook Store now live with 1.5 million titles, Android and BlackBerry apps

Exactly how many eBook stores do we need? Depends. If you own a dedicated e-reader then one is all you get. Own a tablet or smartphone and the world of eBook stores is pretty much yours for the taking through competing apps. Borders looks to be taking a hybrid approach by offering up the $150 Kobo, $120 Aluratek Libre (available July 20th), $170 Sony Touch, and $150 Sony Pocket eReaders and today's launch of a self-branded eBook store powered by Kobo's catalog of more than 1.5 million titles -- "thousands" of which are free and available in a variety of formats including ePub (primarily) and PDF.

Borders also has desktop PC and Mac apps ready for download in addition to a few apps listed as "coming soon" for both Android and BlackBerry devices -- these join the apps already released for Apple's iOS. It just went live so why not hit the source and have a browse.

Best Buy to offer wireless broadband service

Best Buy appears to have quietly launched a wireless broadband service called Best Buy Connect.
Monthly prices range from $29.99 to $59.99 for 250MB to 5GB of 3G data service. (The 250MB option is available only without a contract.) A service contract is offered for one year and two years, and the length of the contract is tied to subsidies on new laptops: the longer the contract, the bigger the subsidy. It appears to work in the same way most people in the U.S. buy a new cell phone.

The service will allow people to log in to monitor their data usage, and Best Buy said it will also e-mail customers when they're approaching their monthly data limit. The service will only be available in the U.S.

Mortal Kombat Creator Says Genre's Complexity Hurting Sales, Still Wants to Appeal to Hardcore Fans
Ed Boon hoping to appeal to both core and casual gamers with upcoming reboot.

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon believes that the hardcore reputation of the fighting game genre has limited its appeal to a niche audience, but he still wants to add more mechanical depth to the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot.

Gozer: Home theater never gets old. Pixel Junk Monsters PSP. iPhone 4.

Aaron: Social Media Camp Long Island (SMCampLI). GPush completely not working for anyone who has it for iPhone. Really annoying since it's a paid app and their support is non-existent. Also Netflix on TiVo is killing me lately. Complete lock ups and requires me to power-cycle in order to get control back. Horrible implementation. I'll use Xbox from now on.

Tech and Gaming News:

Bloomberg: vPhone coming in January

That iPhone on Verizon rumor just won't die -- Bloomberg is now reporting that we'll see an iPhone on Verizon's service in January of next year. "Two people familiar with the plans" say that AT&T exclusivity will finally end next year, and analysts say that if that happens, Apple will sell lots more iPhones, up to 3 million more per quarter to Verizon's 90 million or so customers.

Of course there's no comment by Apple or Verizon so far, and I'll point out that we've heard this rumor time and time and time again -- first back in January of this year, then for the new iPhone 4 announcement and WWDC, and now pushed off until next year. Basically, don't hold your breath. It wouldn't be bad to get away from the often complaint-worthy service at AT&T, but if Apple hasn't seen fit to end exclusivity so far (and don't forget that we're still seeing record iPhone sales), why would it do so next year.

Apple hiring iPhone antenna engineers for some reason

Three Apple job postings for iPhone / iPad antenna engineers to "Define and implement antenna system architecture to optimize the radiation performance for wireless portable devices." All three were posted on June 23rd, the same day that we started seeing widespread reporting of the left-handed reception issues. Coincidence?

Hulu Plus announced with support for iPad, iPhone, PS3, Xbox Live, and more

We've just received word that the premium Hulu service we've heard chatter about for a while now has just become official. Dubbed Hulu Plus, the $10 / month service will feature entire seasons of shows that are available in limited quantities on the free service, as well as other programming not available via Hulu on the web. There will be iPod and iPad apps available (streaming with WiFi or 3G), along with support for Samsung connected TVs and Blu-ray (via Samsung Apps). Also in the works is support for TVs and Blu-ray players from both Vizio and Sony (fall 2010), PS3 (July) , and Xbox 360 (as part of a "custom experience" in Xbox Live Gold, early 2011). Hit up the source link to get in on the "invitation only" preview of the service, and to keep abreast of availability for your favorite hardware. Video after the break.

Geek This Week:

Gozer:

- Ps3 games!! Played Buzz, game modes: hot potato, pie in the face, dunk. GOW 3, Uncharted 2 ( really loving it!), Metal Gear Solid 4 and rented Heavy Rain. Good thing about being a late adopter is CHEAP GAMES!!

- Two words: Remi Gaillard. Check out the mario kart & pac man videos. Imitating these characters to the point of being illegal.

Aaron:

- Becoming a total OCD person when driving my Prius. Working to get the best milage possible while still not driving 30 MPH, which is impossible in NY.
- iOS 4 onto my iPhone 3GS. It's amazingly fast and adds great features. Found out I'm eligible for an upgrade?? Makes no sense, thinking of a possible jump to iPhone 4 if I can figure out how to sell my existing iPhone to cover the costs.
- Toy Story 3.

Nikki:

- Becoming the best geek mom I can be. Old macs repurposed as kid-friendly machines, geeky mom days out, kid friendly card games.

- E3 annoucnements bound to get me going. Assasin's Creed Brotherhood. Totally not kid friendly, but I LOVE ETZIO! Portal 2 will drive me crazy (Glados does my head in).
Gran Turismo 5 with the Stig AND a Tesla AND 3D (Sign me up)
Civilization 5. The perfect way to spend a cold winter day.

-(The IT Crowd is back for season 4! Watch Ep 1 on line :)

Tech and Gaming News:

OnLive Game Prices Revealed

Unlimited play ranges from $4.99 to $59.99, with affordable rental

OnLive -- the cloud-based online gaming service that allows players to "stream" a game over the internet, rather than store the game's files locally -- has finally unveiled its initial pricing options and launch line-up.

The service launched last week, and UK site Eurogamer has listed out the full launch line-up and pricing options.

Here's how it works - users have to be subscribed to OnLive to access any game content at all. Through a partnership with investor AT&T, the first year of subscription is free for a limited time. No word yet on what a subscription will cost once this period is over, though the company's CEO tells me that the company's previously announced $14.95 a month scheme is no longer true.

On top of the monthly subscription fee, users will have to pay money to access each individual game (though demos remain free). Players must remain subscribed to OnLive in order to access the game, even after they have paid for it. So if you plop down $59.99 to play Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction, for example, your ability to play the game terminates as soon as your subscription lapses.

The full list is here. Highlights include the aforementioned $59.99 for Splinter Cell: Conviction, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands at $49.99, and several 3- or 5-day rentals with fees ranging from $4.99 to $8.99.

Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell prototype fuels our electric dreams with 526 horses

Oh, electric supercar, why do you tease us so? Mercedes is latest to throw up a prototype of what it expects future rubber burners to look like, and its SLS E-Cell doesn't disappoint. Based on its petrol-guzzling SLS AMG model, this beast produces 526 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque, thanks to four motors (one for each wheel) allied to a battery array that can provide an industry-leading 480kW of juice.

How fast does that get you to the magical 60mph marker? Try four seconds.</itunes:summary>

Hail fellow geek! It's Max! Show is still great! sorry I haven't been so vocal as of late, saw this on woot, just brought it....hope the link works
think you'd appreciate it :)

Not that it's any of our business, but some of us have been talking and we think you'd really look a lot better if you wore shirts like this:

It Came Out Of Nowhere - http://shirt.woot.com/shirts/it-came-out-of-nowhere

We thought it was best if you heard it from your friends. And it's just ten bucks today, so no excuses.

Topic:

Joining us on this episode is Brian from ExplainTheFee.com. Sprint has decided to charge all buyers of the brand new HTC EVO a $10 'Premium Data' fee every month. Just what is 'Premium Data'? It seems no one knows.

1. How did you first hear about the fee Sprint was going to charge? What was your reaction?
2. Did you try to make contact with Sprint before making this a public battle?
3. Tell us how the site got started.
4. What has the reaction been from people? Have people from Sprint read it?
5. Your site has been reported on by a number of people and even appeared on Consumerist and the front page of Digg. What has that done for ExplainTheFee.com?

Questions:

cronkmeister
If you buy the phone outright without the contract, do they still charge the $10/month fee?#ETFQuestion6:06 PM Jun 13th via web

tonuello
#ETFquestion why is @Sprint essentially charging#Evo users twice (prem. Data), be it for hardware features or the unlimited data plan?

Here is my question that I would like you to address. You focus on what Sprint says about the hardware in their explanation for the fee yet completely ignore that it is about the data and even in Sprint’s explanation they talk about data. You will use more data with this phone even if you are in a 3g area. Why don’t you ever talk about this?

Thanks Guys (for a shout out):

That was an excellent show (episode 216). You had some very interesting subject matter. I'm always interested in anything regarding my (iPhone) 3GS. Have a great week and thanks again. I will be signing in on Mondays now.

Howdy guys,

Fairly new listener to you but I felt compelled to correct something I heard in the recent podcast.

Let me just tell you that I regularly watch videos "in HD" on Netflix when using my TiVo HD. That's real HD - aka 720p.

Netflix "in HD" is dependent on a number of items to be true:
1. The device you are using must be supported. I know that TiVo will work in HD, I'm fairly sure PS3 works in HD, dunno about xbox or boxxee or anything else.
2. The content you are watching must exist at Netflix in HD.
3. Your network bandwidth (actually its a number of factors, not specifically max download rate) must be enough to support HD.

Robert Heron - of HD Nation (Revision 3) spent a long time trying to get HD via Netflix working on his TiVo. He was able to make it work..
http://heronfidelity.com/

In my case it just worked and I didn't experience anything that he did. I don't know what to say about that other than maybe I was lucky. I've also heard other people say that Netflix in "HD" isn't HD, so just wantted to let you know, that it really does exist, the picture quality is STELLAR, (better than DVD qual, but not Blu-Ray yet). No 5.1 or surround either.

Just an FYI and best regards,

Robert

Aaron: Rockin' 49.9 MPG in my Prius so far. HOV lane with just me makes my commute so much easier. Silversun Pickups album 'Swoon' on vinyl! Plants vs. Zombies.

Gozer: PS3. Played it at my wife's friends house. Had a beautiful 47" Vizio full HD 240hrz tv. Showed me Avatar and GB on blu ray. Would not have thought Ghostbusters was filmed in 1984 if you would have seen this sharp picture. Demo'd God of War 3. Amazing. Buzz Quiz show game, up to eight players! I am pretty sure my wife is getting me a ps3 for mah birfday.

Tech and Gaming News:

Ford steering Google Maps into its cars

Ford owners with Sync-equipped vehicles will be able tap into Google Maps to download directions to their cars before month's end.

The free Send to Sync feature, announced Tuesday by Ford, will let drivers send Google Maps data from their Bluetooth-enabled computers or mobile phones to their in-car Sync systems. The electronic directions are downloaded directly into Sync and converted into audible turn-by-turn steps. The route is then calculated on the spot using the latest traffic information.

Ford is touting the service as a way for drivers to keep their eyes on the road by eliminating the need to juggle maps and printouts.

"Printing paper directions from a Web site is a relic in our digital age," Doug VanDagens, director of Ford Connected Services Solutions Organization, said in a statement. "With Send to Sync, you can map a destination at home, at work--wherever you have connectivity--and when you get to your car, it already knows where you want to go."

Launched in 2007, Ford Sync provides car owners with a variety of voice-activated, cloud-based services, including directions, traffic reports, news, weather, movie listings,</itunes:summary>

Geek This Week:

Aaron: Reading Daemon by Daniel Suarez on my Kindle. Really great book that has accurate techno-talk in it. A character uses NetStumbler for crying out loud! The author either did great research or is a complete geek. It's a fantastic book and I believe all listeners to the show would enjoy it.

Gozer: Red Dead Redemption. Gameplay, similarities to GTA. Secret Achievement awesome. Awesome showing of the cutscenes on Fox HD last saturday.
Very excited about getting a new iMac. Have given up on the idea about getting a flat screen for the living room. Wii would look terrible.
Ghostbusters Pachinko game in Japan. Check it out on YouTube.

Tech and Gaming News:

AT&T makes sweeping changes to data plans, iPhone tethering coming at OS 4 launch

...the carrier is coming out swinging today with some significant changes that should benefit the overwhelming majority of its smartphone users (and could stand to harm a select few). Let's break down the major points:

DataPlus / DataPro

The existing $30 fair-use "unlimited" smartphone data plan is being replaced by two new options: $15 per month for 200MB and $25 for 2GB (called "DataPlus" and "DataPro," respectively). Customers currently on the $30 plan are welcome to stay on it, but they can switch at any time without extending their contract.

AT&T's new overage system is arguably the game changer: on the $15 plan, you'll pay $15 for each additional 200MB, but on the $25 plan, you'll pay $10 for each additional GB. It's simple and straightforward -- but most importantly, it won't bankrupt you if you go over by a gig or three in a month. This compares to $50 per gigabyte of overage on AT&T's 5GB DataConnect plan for laptops.
The carrier's going to be very flexible about changing between the DataPlus and DataPro plans -- if you're on DataPlus, for example, and you discover that you're blowing past your allotment, you can choose either to start DataPro the following billing cycle, pro-rate it, or apply the higher plan retroactively to the beginning of your current billing cycle. That's pretty wild.

Tethering

Tethering will be offered as an add-on to the DataPro plan for an additional $20 per month, which means you'll pay a total of $45 a month for 2GB of data shared between your phone and your tethered devices. If you're light on the usage, it's a sweet deal -- but if you scale it up and you're using the data almost exclusively on your laptop, it compares unfavorably to the traditional DataConnect plan: $60 versus $75 for 5GB (and in the unlikely even you've got a webOS device on Verizon, it compares even less favorably). If you're striking a balance of data use between a smartphone and tethered gear, AT&T's new setup is still pretty solid considering that you would've been paying $60 for the USB stick plus $30 for smartphone data before.
Yes, it's finally happening: AT&T's iPhones will get access to the tethering option, too.

iPad

iPad users are also affected by the change. The $30 iPad data plan -- lauded for being labeled by AT&T as truly unlimited -- goes away to be replaced by the same $25 / 2GB plan that smartphone users will see, though current subscribers to the $30 plan can continue unaffected.Everything launches on June 7, except for iPhone tethering -- it'll launch when OS 4 does. In the meantime, we're told users can sign up for the $30 plans both on their phones and iPads if they'd like to be grandfathered in. Follow the break for more details along with AT&T's full press release.

Google opens door for third-party Gmail apps

"If you build it, they will come" isn't always enough. Sometime you have to let somebody else build on your foundation.

That's what Google is now doing with Gmail, letting Google Apps customers add various third-party applications that integrate with the e-mail service.

"Starting today, third-party developers can build Gmail contextual gadgets and distribute them in the Google Apps Marketplace. These gadgets can display information from social networks, business services, Web applications and other systems, and users can interact with that data right within Gmail," Chandrashekar Raghavan, product manager for Google Apps extensions, said in a blog post Tuesday.

iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option

See that screen there? That's from the minty fresh beta 4 of iPhone OS 4.0, which was just released to developers moments ago. Unless our eyes are badly mistaken, that's an option to setup internet tethering on AT&T, something that WWAN warriors have been waiting for since... oh, forever. We're downloading the new build as we speak, and we'll let you know if we find anything out. Oh, and don't get your hopes up too high -- AT&T proclaimed that it was "still waiting on better network performance" before enabling iPhone tethering just three weeks ago.

All it takes is a quick network settings reset.

Nissan Leaf orders already exceeding production capacity, report says

In order to meet the demand, Nissan will boost the production capacity for its new electric car, the Leaf. To date, CEO Carlos Ghosn said that more than 13,000 orders have been received in the US (8,500 orders) and Japan (4,700 orders). Some changes would have to be made since at this rate, Nissan could only produce fewer than 12,000 of the cars by next March. Delivery will begin in December 2010 is expected to a volatile year but Ghosn is confident about Nissan’s future as demand goes up in markets such as China, where sales increased by 60% so far this year.

Skype to roll out five-way video calling next week

Well, it's taken long enough, Skype! Starting next week you will finally be able to video call with up to five people using the company's Group Video Calling feature. The beta, which will be available sometime for download during the week of May 10th, will initially be free, but Skype plans to start charging for the multi-party video fun later in the year. We're not sure if it will support HD calling, but you can bet your bottom dollar that corporations may consider replacing their surely complex videoconferencing setup with this. In other Skype news, the company is rolling out new calling plans to more than 170 countries -- from the looks of the PR after the break, it seems like it could end up saving you big time in comparison to the pay-as-you-go rates. We like savings, sure, but we'll be even more stoked should this ever land on camera-equipped smartphones and tablets.

Google gives search results pages a makeover

Starting Wednesday, Google users will see something very different on search results pages as the world's leading Internet search company trots out one of its most significant redesigns in years.

Google search result pages will get a lot more colorful as Google formally introduces a redesign it has been testing for several years. It's not a huge surprise since Google has been actively testing the design with users for several months, and testing for this particular revision dates back even further, said John Wiley, senior user experience designer for Google.

With the new look, Google is emphasizing the menu of search options that had previously been hidden on the left-side rail of the search results pages. First unveiled in May 2009, search options required a searcher to click on a "show options" link at the top of the page. Now they will be permanently affixed to the left rail, and Google will surface different search options based on whether they are relevant to the query, Wiley said.

For example, a search for "red shoes" would produce the usual set of results, but on the left rail, Google will surface a link to Google's shopping search pages. In the same vein, a search for "NFL draft" would surface news and real-time updates on that rail. Users can access the full list of search options by clicking on "more" but will see a changing list of highlighted options on the left rail for different queries.

And those options themselves will be quite visible: Google is using strong colors to highlight those options, in what Wiley called "a modern crisp clean look." Even Google's logo is getting in on the act, with a subtle overhaul that brightens the colors and drops the shadowing cast by the letters.

Chrome Gains, IE Slumps in Browser Wars

Google Chrome was the fastest growing web browser for the fifth month in a row in analytics company Net Applications’s April market report, while Microsoft Internet Explorer again lost market share.

Chrome’s market share increased from 6.13% to 6.73% — almost a 10% improvement over last month. Internet Explorer saw the most significant loss in this month’s numbers, slipping from 60.65% to 59.95%. Firefox (24.52% – 24.59%) and Apple Safari (4.65 – 4.72%) grew by just 0.07% each. Opera lost 0.07%, ending up with 2.3% of the browser market.
In general, Firefox and and Safari have remained mostly stagnant over the past year, with Safari growing very,</itunes:summary>

Aaron, Gozer, and Allen. Love the show. Great tips, topics, interaction, and always good info to use.

My question is this. I know how to make a backup/copy of a movie dvd, and how to rip it to my laptop/ipod. What I don't know how to do is make a dvd copy of Snow Leopard, for backup. Never had to do it, but, paranoia reigns, so, I want to have two copies. What's the easiest way to accomplish this? It's probably easier than I thought, or I already have the tools, but not sure what they are. I don't want to sell it on a blanket, in front of my house, I just want to make a perfect copy of the dvd.

Thanks, and congrats on over 200 great episodes. Looking forward to listening for a long time.

On today's show we welcome Electric Car advocate Chelsea Sexton. Chelsea was instrumental in the work on the GM EV-1 and was heavily featured in the movie 'Who Killed the Electric Car?'. She is the founder of the Lighting Rod Foundation. She runs a a very sporadic blog at evchels.wordpress.com, can be found at green.autoblog.com/ and can be found on Twitter as EVChels.

Questions for Chelsea:

A: What is your 'Geek Cred'?

1. How did you get into cars?
2. What were your initial thoughts about the EV-1?
3. What do you think about the Nissan Leaf and Better Place?
4. Your thoughts on an electric delorean?
5. How did you get involved in 'Who Killed..'? Tell us about the sequel.
6. Tell us about Plug-in America and the Lightning Rod Foundation?

Allen's Questions
1. Based on your history with GM and the events that occurred regarding the EV-1, would you consider buying another GM car, such as the Volt or another if it was a "killer" car?

2. Even though the gasoline that we now obtain is from other countries, my concern with electric vehicles is that once 50% of America is using them (let's say in 20 years), wouldn't that damage our electrical grid infrastructure? We saw what happened in the Northeast in 2003 (blackout). My feeling is that our country is in no position to offer "unlimited" electricity.

3. Why are electric cars so rounded in shape? I understand it's for aerodynamic purposes, but if EV's were the same size as modern-day cars, wouldn't we have more space for battery, thus allowing further range? This would of course cater to more "mainstream" Americans.

Checked out Opera Mini on the iPhone. Tough to see if it's really that much faster than Safari. They display pages in a different fashion and all traffic for Opera Mini go through their servers so privacy is a concern. In addition you can't set Opera as your default browser, so any links you click in any other app would go into Safari. It's nice to check out but I don't think I see myself using this day-in day-out.

Adobe scraps work to bring Flash apps to iPhone

What a difference two weeks and a few words of legalese can make to the future of a widely used programming technology.

In that span of time, Adobe Systems has gone from touting its technology for building Flash applications that run on the iPhone to canceling future development of that technology.

When Apple changed the terms of its iPhone 4.0 software developer kit license, it effectively blocked Adobe's move. But in his Tuesday announcement that Adobe will cease future development of the Flash-apps-on-iPhone technology, Mike Chambers, Adobe's principal product manager for the Flash platform, let loose a tirade that indicates the battle between the two companies isn't over yet.

"As developers for the iPhone have learned, if you want to develop for the iPhone you have to be prepared for Apple to reject or restrict your development at any time, and for seemingly any reason," Chambers said. "The primary goal of Flash has always been to enable cross browser, platform and device development. The cool Web game that you build can easily be targeted and deployed to multiple platforms and devices. However, this is the exact opposite of what Apple wants. They want to tie developers down to their platform, and restrict their options to make it difficult for developers to target other platforms."

Adobe takes the matter seriously. It disclosed in a regulatory filing that its business could be harmed if the iPhone and iPad don't support Adobe technology. And Adobe could be considering legal action against Apple, too, according to one report.

In a response, Apple indicated its preference for a variety of up-and-coming standards that collectively compete with what Flash can do.
"Someone has it backwards--it is HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and H.264 (all supported by the iPhone and iPad) that are open and standard, while Adobe's Flash is closed and proprietary," said spokeswoman Trudy Miller in a statement.

Botched McAfee update shutting down corporate XP machines worldwide

We're hearing from all over that a bad McAfee for Windows XP update is causing computers worldwide to shut down. Apparently DAT update 5958 deletes the svchost.exe file, which then triggers a false-positive in McAfee itself and sets off a chain of uncontrolled restarts and loss ofnetworking functionality. Yeah, wild -- Twitter is basically going nuts, and McAfee's support site appears to be down. There are some fixes floating around out there, but it may be too late -- the final tally of borked PCs today may reach into the millions. We've already heard anecdotally that an Intel facility has been affected, as well as Dish Network call centers, and we're sure there are going to be more reports as the day wears on.

Hi again. Liked your show about the iPad competitors and the future of slates in general. Was suprised that you didn't mention the HP Slate ( see specs at link):

http://i.engadget.com/2010/04/05/hp-slate-to-cost-549-have-1-6ghz-atom-z530-5-hour-battery/

It comes with several features missing on the Ipad (web cam, USB,flash). I'm torn between this or waiting for the Courier to become reality.

As for the future of the pad/slate computers, I think that they will, in the next decade, come to augment desktop computers (which will serve as basestations) and replace laptops as mobile computers/media viewers. Thoughts?

Yakov gives us a call to talk about Java.

Email from Wes:

Hi. New fan of your podcast. A couple of comments:

1. Apps priced too high. I agree. And if enough of the consumers agree then the prices will drop, just as they did with the iPhone. Prices always start out too high because consumers don't respond very well to price increases on items that start out cheep. As to the WSJ app in particular, they're still stuck in the past, making a online version of their print media rather than producing a truly new form of product. Their pricing reflects this, and they will adjust when they are confronted with the non-existant sales of their app.

2. As to who will buy an ipad, it will be people who don't already have an iPhone or iPod touch. They've never experienced the joy of the app store; they will like the idea of having movies, games and books in a bigger format.

3. The ipad (and it's clones) will kill the kindle because people like the idea of hardware with multiple abilities. I got an iPod touch instead of a regular mp3 player for this very reason.

Great show guys!

Fringe!!! OMG this show has come back with a vengeance! Reminds me so much of Sliders.
Mass Effect & Scene it Lights Camera Action for Xbox.

Gozer:

iPad mania? Was in NYC all day Friday with my in laws and my wife and we popped into the 5th ave apple store around 9ish. If my twitter memory serves me correctly, Allen was there around 7ish? Anyway, i have no interest in the iPad, but for awhile i had a great interest in a MacBook pro. That was soon shot down when i closely examined what i could get for the price of a MacBook pro vs. an iMac

15 inch MacBook pro $1699.00

2.53GHz, 2.66GHz, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
4GB memory
250GB, 320GB, or 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor with 256MB or 512MB GDDR3 memory (select models)
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor

27 inch iMac $1699.00

2.66GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.2GHz
2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.46GHz; Hyper-Threading for up to eight virtual cores
4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM; four SO-DIMM slots support up to 16GB

1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA hard drive
Optional 2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA hard drive

Yes, i bought the new Modern Warfare 2 map pack. I don't know why! Fortunately, I have not experienced any xbox live problems. There are 3 new maps and 2 old ones. Now remember gears of war 2 released gears 1 maps slightly tweeded, mostly added snow. The 2 old maps are exactly the same! Where's the migration of maps from COD 4 for free? Where are the spec ops missions??

Lastly, excited to play some Splinter Cell Conviction co-op with Mahhhhhk next week!

Tech and Gaming News:

Verizon CEO confirms he's told Apple he wants the iPhone, won't say if he's getting it

So Verizon wants the iPhone. No secret there, right? Not exactly, but Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg has side-stepped any questions on the subject in the past, which makes his recent comments at a conference hosted by the Council of Foreign Relations all the more notable. For the first time, Seidenberg confirmed that he has told Apple that he wants Verizon to carry the iPhone, adding that "we're open to getting the device,"and that "our network is capable of handling it." What he wouldn't say, obviously, is whether Verizon would be getting the phone, saying simply that it's "Apple's call." In other news, Seidenberg also took the opportunity to shoot down rumors of a merger with Vodafone, saying that "there's no compelling reason that this is an exciting thing to do," although he did add that things could always change.

Xbox 360 USB Flash Support Update Now Live

Microsoft's Larry Hryb confirmed release of the title update today, which will allow gamers to use external flash drives to store just about anything that previously had to go on a 360 hard drive -- including game saves, Xbox Live profiles, and any downloaded game demos.

To use a USB flash drive, you must first configure it in the memory area of the 360's system settings menu. You can choose how much of your device to commit to 360 use (up to 16GB), but note that for however long that portion remains committed to the 360, it won't be usable when you connect your drive to a PC or Mac -- only whatever space you didn't commit to the 360 will remain accessible.

To support the new functionality, Microsoft has partnered with SanDisk to create 360-branded 8 and 16GB flash drives for release in May. Do note that these devices are rumored to cost between $40 and $70 (via Kotaku),</itunes:summary>

Desperate times for Palm - http://news.cnet.com/8301-30684_3-20000800-265.html - Palm sold just 408,000 smartphones to consumers in its last quarter. But it shipped 960,000 smartphones to its retail partners, meaning there were more Palm phones sitting on the sidelines during the quarter than were actually sold to real people, well over a year after Palm captivated the tech industry by unveiling the Palm Pre at CES 2009.

Palm issues disappointing earnings - http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-20000748-94.html - For the quarter, Palm reported a non-GAAP net loss of $102.8 million, or 61 cents per share, far beyond the 42 cent loss Wall Street had been expecting.

Palm moving to Android to stay alive? Not according to Palm - http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/palm-moving-to-android-to-stay-alive-not-according-to-palm/ -....we picked up the phone and actually spoke to Palm, they had a pretty quick response. Their answer? Our sources at the company essentially laughed when they heard this news, and they emphatically stated that there was no memo, and no move internally towards Android. Furthermore, many of the reports are citing a bunk piece of news from Monday which erroneously stated that Palm had halted production -- that news has also been refuted by the company.

Palm: this is your survival guide - http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/19/palm-this-is-your-survival-guide/ - Now, less than a year and a half later, you've nearly returned to the dark and desperate place you'd found yourself in at the end of 2008; a rapidly declining mindshare, the bottom falling out of your stock, and bad dips in phone sales. All of it is leaving you backed into a corner where the common perception now is that you've got to sell to survive at all. So what went wrong? How did such a promising launch lead to such a disappointing reality? And how can you wrestle your way back from the brink yet again? Is that even an option?

Geek This Week:

Aaron:

Used the remaining money on my iTunes gift card to get Monopoly for the iPhone. Good game when you have no one to play against but the game is clearly set to advantage the computer.

Gozer:

Played the Splinter Cell Conviction Demo. Pretty quick demo. Does the fringe esq type font on the actual video to tell you what your next objective is. Starts off with you interrogating this guy in the bathroom. Next scene is you sneaking around into this wharehouse, cover system is interesting. When in cover you can choose where u wanna go next and then hit "a" and he will automatically go there. Also, bonuses for non weapon kills, in that after the non weapon kill you get a free gun kill. Meaning that all you have to do to kill 2 guys at once is hit 1 button. Interesting but maybe making it too easy

Gameroom! This is a free download. There are also 2 free decor pacs you can use to decorate your arcade room. Games so far are split up into arcade, atari and intellivision. Each game is 240 points which is a little over 2 dollars.
I picked up centipede and crystal castles. Hopefully they will do some more later 80's games. My dream arcade would be Double Dragon, Narc, Ninja Gaiden, Operation Wolf, TMNT, Paperboy ( with the bike handle bars) Final Fight, Indiana Jones, P.O.W., Bad Dudes, Street Fighter 2, House of the Dead and Mortal Kombat.

    24!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apple set to match Amazon's $9.99 Price Point for eBook best sellers?

App Advice reports that earlier this week it had an opportunity to view Apple's forthcoming iBookstore and saw that the vast majority of titles from The New York Times' best sellers list currently appear priced at the same $9.99 price point favored by Amazon's Kindle Store.
Anyway, at the moment, out of the 32 eBooks featured in the New York Time's Bestsellers section, 27, including the entire top 10 are priced at $9.99.
Of the remaining five titles from the best sellers list, the highest price listed is $12.99.

Apple's iBookstore pricing model, based on that used in its App Store, involves publishers setting sales prices with Apple taking a 30% cut of revenue. That model had been thought to be pushing most best seller eBook titles to a range of $12.99 to $14.99, above the $9.99 price point seen with Amazon's offerings. But a subsequent report suggested that the higher price range is merely a ceiling and that publishers will be permitted and even encouraged to offer lower price points such as those apparently being seen in the iBookstore.

The iBookstore is set to launch in the U.S. alongside the iPad on April 3rd.

Nintendo to unveil 3-D gaming console

The 3-D entertainment craze continues to spread to video games. Nintendo announced Tuesday it will introduce a handheld console that plays games in 3-D without the use of special glasses.

The handheld device will be called the 3DS, succeeding Nintendo's DS series of portable gaming consoles. A brief press release issued by Nintendo did not specifically state how the 3-D effect would work on the device.

The console won't go on sale until June at the earliest. Nintendo said it will announce more details at the E3 trade show, to be held June 15-17 in Los Angeles, California.

Feedback:

Aaron, in a previous show with Gozer you were talking about Tivos and recording various shows and what was available online. You mentioned watching 24 but if you missed an episode they are not rerun. While you are correct in saying this, I wanted to let you know that IF your Tivo somehow misses a show or it does not record well (this sometimes happens to me since I record over the air, I refuse to buy cable) you can watch the shows by buying them from Amazon on Demand for $1.99 each. When you do this you can watch them on your computer or download them to your Tivo (which is how I do it).

This is a great option as you get to watch the show, without commercials, for only two bucks. Also this is a purchase, not a rental, so once you buy it you can rewatch, even redownload for free if you delete it from your Tivo. The only drawback is that they are not available until the day after they air. So if you get home late on a Monday and find the show did not record you will have to wait until Tuesday to watch it.

Verizon delays Android 2.1 rollout to Motorola Droid, new date is TBD

After hearing for days that Verizon Wireless would be pushing out the highly anticipated Android 2.1 update to its stable of Droid users, along comes this. Internal company documentation clearly states that the aforementioned update won't be going down today, and there's no clear indication of when it will. To quote:
"The OTA software update for the Droid by Motorola is TBD. A new date will be communicated as soon as possible.
The 3/18 OTA software update will not happen as planned. A new date will be communicated as soon as possible."

Google's Nexus One coming to Sprint

Making the rounds, are we Google? Just over 24 hours after we saw an AT&T-friendly Nexus One go on sale, along come Sprint yelling "me too!" at the top of its lungs. Today marks the day that Google's first-ever smartphone now has at least a holding place on all four of the major US carriers, with T-Mobile nabbing it first and Verizon users still waiting for that vague "spring release." Unfortunately, Sprint's making us wait when it comes to finding out an exact price and release date, but at least we're assured that both are coming "soon."

Report: Google to leave China on April 10

Google is expected to announce on Monday that it will withdraw from China on April 10, according to a report in a Beijing-based newspaper that cited an unidentified sales associate who works with the company.
"I have received information saying that Google will leave China on April 10, but this information has not at present been confirmed by Google," the China Business News quoted the agent as saying. The report also said Google would reveal its plans for its China-based staff that day.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Google, which has a significant share of the search market in China, announced in January that it no longer intended to censor search results in that country and would consider leaving entirely. Google has identified China as the source of attacks on prominent U.S. Web properties and e-mail accounts belonging to human rights activists, though it has not revealed the specific people behind them. For its part, the Chinese government has denied any involvement.

Geek This Week:

Aaron: Trying to avoid the iPad hype and generating a false sense of 'want' for this device. I've maintained since its announcement that I do not need one and I still believe that. Unfortunately when you live inside the hype-machine, it's tough to not get caught up.

Saw a video on Engadget for the Microsoft Courier device. http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/05/microsofts-courier-digital-journal-exclusive-pictures-and-de/. The specs are very interesting: under an inch thick, weighs a little over a pound, and isn't much bigger than a 5x7 photo when closed. The Courier is built on Tegra 2 and runs on the same OS as the Zune HD, Pink, and Windows Mobile 7 Series, which Engadget is taking to mean Windows CE 6. This device looks amazing and perhaps Microsoft finally got some designers to develop their products. If it hits the market as-is and is affordable, I will absolutely get one.

Gozer: Dante's Inferno - God of War clone, really enjoying it. You have a scythe and a holy cross ( shotgun) You can choose to absolve tortured souls or punish them. Punishing them will give you points to upgrade your scythe and absolving souls will upgrade your holy cross. Gets a little tedious but the environments of the different levels of hell are awesome.

Final Fantasy 13 - (preface this by saying Res Evil 5 and FF13 were my 2 most highly anticipated games for this generation and i have been somewhat let down by both. joystiq interview.)

FF13 is extremely linear. Also they did away with town exploration which was always a nice relxing break between battles. WTF? Also, the battle system is so dumbed down. You can only control one character. All of your other characters just assist you as they see fit. What happened to controlling everyone. Wierd.

FCC releases some details of its broadband plan

Sick of slow Internet connections? The federal government hears you.
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Monday unveiled some details of its broadband plan, which aims to speed up Web connections and make high-speed Internet available to more Americans.
The commission plans to use educational programs and an expansion of broadband Internet infrastructure to give 90 percent of Americans high-speed Internet access at home by 2020.
Currently, only 65 percent of Americans have high-speed Internet access at home, which the FCC says is a detriment to economic growth. The proposal will make the U.S. "the world's largest market of high-speed broadband users" and will create jobs, the FCC says in a news release.
The plan would also lower health care costs and improve home energy efficiency by making information available digitally, the FCC says.

They added three more programs you get just for tweeting that you made your purchase and then this morning an 8th program was added: Tweetie 2 beta.

The MacHeist bundle has always featured good programs at an incredible price and a portion goes to charity. The main bundle later this year is sure to be awesome but for now, head on over to macheist.com to score your programs!

Eager gamers have no doubt already seen the teasers, but Valve has now finally confirmed that its Steam game distribution service and Source engine will at long last be headed to the Mac. According to Valve, the company's current line-up of games (including the Half-Life and Left 4 Dead series) will be available to Mac users in April, while Portal 2 will represent the company's first simultaneous release for PC and Mac later this year. Better still, Steamworks for Mac also boasts a new feature called "Steam Play," which will let you buy a game once and, for instance, start playing it on a PC at work and then pick up where you left off on your Mac at home (we'll give you a moment to let that sink in). Game publishers will have to enable that feature themselves, but Valve says it expects most to take advantage of it.

TiVo Premiere and Premiere XL usher in a brand new interface, optional QWERTY remote
By Nilay Patel posted Mar 2nd 2010 6:53PM

Over three years after the original Series3 launched, TiVo's back with Series4 -- say hello to the new TiVo Premiere and Premiere XL, which will arrive in early April. The new slimmer hardware is nice, but the big news is the totally revamped HD interface built on Flash -- yes, Flash -- with all kinds of new options for discovering content from recorded, on-air, and internet sources. The new UI is only for the Series4, and TiVo's pitching the Premiere line as a single-box solution for getting content on your TV, so although there's long been support for services like Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand, it's now being pushed to the front -- content will show up in searches and be exposed on the main screen.</itunes:summary>

Feedback:

Apple fanboys are dillusional that their little platform matters in the big picture. I work for a brokerage firm, as a senior programmer and our statistics on users are about 5% osx about 8% linux/unix, the rest is various flavors of windows. Our software is written in java, and even though you may think its a big fail, java is thriving in the financial sector because it does deliver on the cross compatibility promise. And with computers getting so fast, the virtual machine aspect of java fades away into the background. So in the environment
where our customers are financially savy well off investors, they choose windows, who is still choosing apple? And why should Microsoft put the resources in to develop Mac compatability for zune or for the Windows Phone?

It is not half the market like you said, it barely registers on a pie chart. Sorry, but MS has been languishing for at least 5 years basically doing nothing, and Apple has not gained any appreciable market share in the pc market. Outside of the iPhone and the iPod, i would have to call Apple a big fail. Really if they didn't have the mobile platform, only the fanboys would care. The big push from the fanboys should be to open the sale of the OS. I guarantee you that if you could install OS X freely on any pc, it would have a 30% market share within a year. Then, they would matter - for now they are a consumer electronics company whose main business is iPhone, iPod and they dabble in pcs..

Oh and i have a mac on my desk and love it, even though the keyboard and mouse stink.

Geek This Week:

Aaron:

Not too much geeking out for me this week. I've been watching mostly the Olympics and enjoyed the USA win over Canada in Men's Hockey. One cool thing is that Nissan is heavily advertising the Leaf, which we featured on our show just two episodes ago!

Drop7: still a time-suck.

Gozer:

My new favorite podcast! Talkradar, it's a gaming podcast that discusses new games and retro stuff as well. The thing that really hooked me is that whenever they discuss a game, they play the music and/or sound effects from that game.

http://ocremix.org/ This is a website devoted to video game music remixes. They have a little something from almost every game console.

Mass Effect 2 - I have all recruited, except the robot, and have completed every loyalty mission. Now i am just exploring the galaxy searching planets and trying to find anomalies. The anomalies, when discovered, turn into little bite sized missions.
I am a renegade, so i don't take crap from anyone. Example, there was this women reporter being a bit nosy, so when my renegade option came up i hit the right trigger and it made Shepard punch her in the face!!

I am also tryina get with Jack, who is a female biotic. She's crazy but is opening up to me. I did get an opportunity to have some meaningless @*# with her but told her i wanted to get to know her better. I figure since i am playing the bad guy this game she would be a good character to try to get with.

Last but not least, i am extremely excited about someone i am going to meet very soon.

Tech and Gaming News:

Apple bans most (but not all) sexy apps

Apple has tightened its restrictions on sexy or suggestive apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and many of the most popular programs in the iTunes app store have been removed.
While speaking to the New York Times, Apple executive Phil Schiller explained, "It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see."

Several days ago the developer of the Wobble app posted the results of his discussion with Apple on his blog. The Wobble app, which adds a jelly-like wobble motion to any user supplied photo, was recently removed because advertisements suggested it could be used on photos of breasts.

I have spoken with Apple, and the following are the new rules:
1. No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either)
2. No images of men in bikinis! (I didn’t ask about Ice Skating tights for men)
3. No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry)
4. No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs (yes – I am serious, we have to remove the silhouette in this pic)
5. No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex – all banned
6. Nothing that can be sexually arousing!! (I doubt many people could get aroused with the pic above but those puritanical guys at Apple must get off on pretty mundane things to find Wobble "overtly sexual!")
