It's awesome that you guys are doing this. Btw too bad that the US couldn't pull it out in OT. And living in CT, it's great to hear a tech podcast out of the north east. My assertion that apple outside of the ipod and iphone platform is a big fail stands - OSX is locked to the small market share, and the only people who get to experience it are the 5%ers, which is a shame - as I said, I have a mac in my office, next to a linux and a windows box, and the mac is great, i love using my wife's macbook pro, its terrific. And i wish i could install it legitmitely on my water cooled I7 sli, ssd raid machine. But I can't and as long as OSX remains for the priveladged few - well Apple better keep churning out iPods, iPhones - I reserve judgement on the iPad, because in the pc world - they barely register. On a different note i bought my parents a blue ray player with netflix streaming (150 bucks), and gave them a 1 year subscription to netflix, and they love it. They rent BD movies, and watch streaming movies. And they said that after 1 year is up they will renew. Better than my dad getting in trouble for torrenting. He is over 60, but he knows enough to be dangerous. -Yakov ************** Geek This Week: Aaron: Had a fairly geeky birthday. Watched Star Trek for the second time and then after coming home from dinner, we watched Back to the Future Part 3. BTTF was my wife's idea because we were talking about time travel due to Trek. My wife is quite the stickler for time travel and hates when writers don't think of all angels such as in Journeyman and Lost. Back to the Future is time travel done right and I couldn't agree more. Gozer: Playin PSP!: Soulcalibur and Lunar Silver Star Harmony Played some more Bioshock 2, eh. Finished Mass Effect 2. Suicide mission that may or may not be. Depending on what happens in the suicide mission is directly related to the choices you make in the game. I had two NOOOOOOOOO!! moments in the end. Tried to go back to do the end again and it didn't work. Overall, an amazing game. Game of the year 2010. ************** Tech and Gaming News: Activision: Treyarch's next Call of Duty this fall; pair of Modern Warfare 2 map packs this year by Richard Mitchell Activision has confirmed that Treyarch's next entry in the series will be released this fall. Assuming Activision adheres to its thus far rock-solid Call of Duty schedule, a November release seems likely. Whether or not the series will make the rumored move to Vietnam remains unconfirmed. In other unsurprising Call of Duty news, Activision has confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 DLC will consist of multiplayer map packs. The map packs were more or less outed last year, thanks to some loose-lipped energy drink packaging, but Activision hasn't actually confirmed the exact nature of the DLC until now. The first two map packs -- slated to appear first on Xbox Live -- are in development at Infinity Ward. I work for a brokerage firm, as a senior programmer and our statistics on users are about 5% osx about 8% linux/unix, the rest is various flavors of windows. Our software is written in java, and even though you may think its a big fail, java is thriving in the financial sector because it does deliver on the cross compatibility promise. And with computers getting so fast, the virtual machine aspect of java fades away into the background. So in the environment where our customers are financially savy well off investors, they choose windows, who is still choosing apple? And why should Microsoft put the resources in to develop Mac compatability for zune or for the Windows Phone? It is not half the market like you said, it barely registers on a pie chart. Sorry, but MS has been languishing for at least 5 years basically doing nothing, and Apple has not gained any appreciable market share in the pc market. Outside of the iPhone and the iPod, i would have to call Apple a big fail. Really if they didn't have the mobile platform, only the fanboys would care. The big push from the fanboys should be to open the sale of the OS. I guarantee you that if you could install OS X freely on any pc, it would have a 30% market share within a year. Then, they would matter - for now they are a consumer electronics company whose main business is iPhone, iPod and they dabble in pcs.. I've been watching mostly the Olympics and enjoyed the USA win over Canada in Men's Hockey. One cool thing is that Nissan is heavily advertising the Leaf, which we featured on our show just two episodes ago! Drop7: still a time-suck. Gozer: My new favorite podcast! Talkradar, it's a gaming podcast that discusses new games and retro stuff as well. They have a little something from almost every game console. Mass Effect 2 - I have all recruited, except the robot, and have completed every loyalty mission. I am a renegade, so i don't take crap from anyone. Example, there was this women reporter being a bit nosy, so when my renegade option came up i hit the right trigger and it made Shepard punch her in the face!! I am also tryina get with Jack, who is a female biotic. She's crazy but is opening up to me. I did get an opportunity to have some meaningless @*# with her but told her i wanted to get to know her better. I figure since i am playing the bad guy this game she would be a good character to try to get with. Last but not least, i am extremely excited about someone i am going to meet very soon. ************** Tech and Gaming News: Apple bans most (but not all) sexy apps Apple has tightened its restrictions on sexy or suggestive apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and many of the most popular programs in the iTunes app store have been removed. While speaking to the New York Times, Apple executive Phil Schiller explained, "It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see." Several days ago the developer of the Wobble app posted the results of his discussion with Apple on his blog. The Wobble app, which adds a jelly-like wobble motion to any user supplied photo, was recently removed because advertisements suggested it could be used on photos of breasts. I have spoken with Apple, and the following are the new rules: 1. No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either) 2. No images of men in bikinis! (I didn’t ask about Ice Skating tights for men) 3. No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry) 4. No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs (yes – I am serious, we have to remove the silhouette in this pic) 5. This AWESOME utility (found at http://blog.boastr.net/ (http://blog.boastr.net/)) allows not just for expansion of the usable gestures but it also allows you to create custom gestures with a huge array of options. The best thing of all is that you can have program-specific gestures. For example, if I three-finger click while in Safari, I get a new tab with Google.com loaded. It's incredibly awesome and makes my mouse a thousand-times more useful. I will admit though that the gesture I wanted and use the most is the Apple-included two-finger swipe to navigate forward and back in Safari. Gozer: Star Wars one man show. Mass Effect 2. Yes i bought it. Couldn't really get into the first game but figured i would give this one a shot. I am definitely sucked in at this point. You play a commander Shepard, customize your character. Basically there are these reapers that are destroying human colonies throughout the galaxy and you have to investigate what is going on. This is an awesome sci-fi / roleplaying / action game. Role playing aspect i took a jack bauer approach. The action is similar to gears, great cover system. Squad based mechanics are awesome. And...converting alot of old analog vhs to digital which we will get to later. ************** Tech and Gaming News: AT&T Insiders Report iPhone Exclusivity Going Away On Wednesday Saturday, January 23, 2010 - by Shawn Oliver It's sort of hard to believe that all the hype from CES is already over and done with. Larger companies spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to introduce and showcase new products at the show, and now all anyone wants to talk about in the tech world is Apple. Must be nice to be Steve Jobs (or an investor). The company that gave the world the iPod and iPhone is planning a media event on the 27th of this month, and while the world tends to believe a tablet or slate of some sort is planned, there has been no definite proof of that to this point. We really have no idea what's next from Apple; we just know that it'll be something to unleash one's creative side according to a tagline in the invite. According to an inside source close to the going-ons involved in all of this, a new tablet of some sort may not be the only thing on deck for next Wednesday though. We have been led to believe by an inside source that AT&T will lose their iPhone exclusivity on the same day, though it's not yet clear what other carrier (or carriers) will be stepping in to also carry the phone. For anyone who has followed the saga, you may notice that you haven't seen AT&T fighting to extend their original exclusive agreement of late. In fact, they have spent most of their time fighting Verizon's negative ad campaign. This may not be all that surprising. But it’s one main advantage is that it still commands a large audience, and in fact was the fourth largest Website in the U.S.—until last month. ComScore data for November, 2009 shows that Facebook surpassed Aol with 102.9 million unique visitors in the U.S., versus 99.7 million for Aol. Although Aol’s unique visitors grew by nearly a million since October, 2009, Facebook grew by more than 5 million. On an annual basis, Facebook’s U.S. audience grew 104 percent since November, 2008 (from 50.5 million visitors). During the same period, Aol’s audience declined by 8 percent. Picked up Super Mario Bros. for the Wii and I'll be sure to give that a try later on this week. Found a fantastic iPhone app called ShopSavy that scans barcodes. It will then check all prices online along with local stores using the iPhone's location, which is awesome. It shows reviews and lets you save items to check later. A fantastic app and it's free! It's a total must-have for the holiday shopper. Gozer: Had a great thanksgiving, played modern warfare 2 local multiplayer free for all death match with my wife's family. Really alot more fun playing with people next to you than over live. My father in law and uncle in law stayed up all night to go to wal mart to get $80 cameras and 50 AA for $9. They stayed up all night researching!!! Playin a ton of New Super Mario Bros. Havin alot of fun playin it with my wife. We are on world 8 and these worlds get increasingly harder. Also playing it single player, alot easier to get through but it is fun to have the co-op experience. The cool thing about co-op is you pretty much have infinite lives and continues. Everytime someone dies they can come back when the level is over +5 lives. If you both die on the same level with no lives left then the game is over and you will revert back to your last game save. Tried out the new Scene It. Not really that impressed. NO avatar support like the last game and NO ONLINE PLAY!! very disappointing. They have this thing where you select stereotypical hollywood characters as your avatars, to choose these avatars then start the game is a pain in the ass. It almost seems more like a game show then a movie trivia game. There is this host that follows you around and tells you what is going on. Also, i am still not sure about this, you earn stars at the end of each round and you can use these stars to get a points multiplier for the next round. If you miss getting this multiplier, it will go to another player. Lots of current movies than classic movies in this version. I believe warner brothers picked up this new version. ************** Tech and Gaming News: Nook ship date slips to January 11th, supply chain managers weep Hardware construction is a funny thing. Sometimes, regardless of the money you throw at something, you just can't get products to come together any quicker. Evidently that's the case with Barnes & Noble's Nook, which has seen its estimated ship date slip from today to sometime after the holidays, and now to January 11th. There's still a sliver of hope that you'll be able to snag one from a high-traffic retail location on December 7th, but unless you're planning on abandoning ship and helping the Kindle have its new best month ever, the realistic choices are pretty clear: a) pay Tickle Me Elmo-like prices on eBay or b) drop an IOU in a nicely wrapped box, preferably with a cute puppy. Google plans to add TiVo "television viewing data" to its existing Google TV Ads program, the two companies said in a press release Tuesday. Google TV Ads is the company's attempt to re-create its AdWords and AdSense model on the small screen through a partnership with Dish Network, and it wants to use TiVo data to help its advertising clients measure how and when their ads are viewed. DVRs like TiVo are not the favorite tech product of the television advertising business, as they allow viewers to watch shows whenever they like and skip the commercials. But most DVR owners (except for a few masters of the remote control) catch glimpses of ads as they whiz by, or overshoot the end of the commercial period and hit the 30-second rewind button, exposing them to the last ad shown before the program resumes. That kind of viewing shouldn't count as a full ad impression, since the advertiser knows the viewer didn't watch the full ad, but Google seems to feel that it can't be completely ignored, either. It plans to use "anonymous second-by-second DVR viewing data" to track how viewers see ads placed through Google TV Ads. It also gives Google more access to viewer behavior on sources outside of Dish Network, including cable, satellite, and over-the-air viewers. That could presumably make Google TV Ads more attractive to potential advertisers, since Google will be able to assemble a wealth of data on the viewing habits of DVR owners. Google also has a deal with Nielsen for viewing data, although some feel the new TiVo partnership will put a lot of strain on that relationship. WTF happened w/ my interest in Dollhouse? It's canceled anyhow and Chuck comes back in January! Gozer: Modern Warfare 2: Single player - Airport level? Controversial? I love the missions on american soil especially defending burger town. I think it is better than COD 4. Every mission is like WOW, i just love looking around and enjoying the view. The last mission i played really made me feel a bit emotional like this can't be happening. Totally effective in making you feel something instead of just running around shooting people. Spec Ops: Played a bit co-op tried some levels in alpha. Bridge level, horde mode snow level & stealth snow level. Multiplayer: Really enjoying multiplayer. They've added soooo much as far as killstreaks. In COD 4 there were only a few killstreaks. UAV's , helicopters and some sort of bombs. This time you have: 3 Kills - UAV 4 Kills - Care Package 4 Kills - Counter UAV 5 Kills - Sentry Gun 5 Kills - Predator Missile 6 Kills - Precision Airstrike 7 Kills - Strike 7 Kills - Attack Heli 8 Kills - Emergency Airdrop 9 Kills - Pave Low 9 Kills - Stealth Bomber 11 Kills - Chopper Gunner 11 Kills - AC-130 15 Kills - EMP 25 Kills - Tactical Nuke Deathstreaks are awesome. You are rewarded for dying 3 times! IF you die 3x you can steal an enemies weapons to hopefully give you an advantage. Guns of choice: Scar with red dot sight or holographic. AA shotgun. Still don't like the Acog sight. Alot people playin sayin they love it. The sight is just too big and cuts off your vision. New Super Mario Bros Wii: Totally old school. This game is almost like it came after super mario land for snes. I was a bit apprehensive about multiplayer on a 2-d platformer but it works really well. Anyone who started in the 8bit era and skipped over everything else, could easily pick up this game and feel completely comfortable. Alot of throw backs to the original games along with some new things. There are some new suits including: twirly hat suit thing, shrinking mushroom that gives you crazy speed and a penguin outfit. If your partners or partners die than they return to the screen in this bubble thing where you have to pop them in order for them to get back in the game. Also you can pick each other up, for example, my wife was having trouble with this one part so i just picked her up and finished the level. My wife and i played and Trauma was coming on last night, it was about 8:50, and i said why don't we stop and she said no lets keep playing the tivo is recording it. You know right before you go to sleep you say i love you and all that crap? Apple and Creative announced a broad settlement ending all legal disputes between the two companies. Apple will pay Creative $100 million for a paid-up license to use Creative's recently awarded patent in all Apple products. Apple can recoup a portion of its payment if Creative is successful in licensing this patent to others. In addition Creative has joined Apple's "Made for iPod" program and will be announcing their own iPod accessory products later this year. Steve Jobs, commenting about the settlement said "Creative is very fortunate to have been granted this early patent." 14-year-old girl sues friend over missing iPod. A missing iPod resulted in a lawsuit in Wheaton, Illinois, when 14-year-old Shannon Derrik sued her friend Stephanie Eick for losing her brand new iPod. Shannon lent her iPod to Stephanie, who decided it'd be a good idea to give back the iPod by leaving it on Shannon's desk rather than waiting for her to return from the restroom to hand it over in person, and at that point the iPod went missing. Shannon has sued for $475 in damages and court fees. Apple updated Battery Exchange Program iBook G4 and PowerBook G4. Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances. Now I haven't been to the site in forever but it reminded me that I still have my old page there that covered the TV series Sliders. Geocities was a place that helped me learn HTML and it's an integral part to the early beginnings of the internet. I'll be sure to log in for one last time and download all the files so they aren't lost for all time. Thinking of changing my current backup scheme to a different setup. I currently use Time Machine with two drives, one of which I keep off-site. I currently swap the drives once every 5-6 months and then I also have Backup copy my documents & vital files to MobileMe. I've heard a lot lately about Time Machine not being as reliable as Apple would have us think, so this combined with the recent Sidekick data fail makes has me re-thinking my backup scheme. Talk about epic fail. For the first 20 minutes my inbox showed ALL mail that had come in within the past 3 days, even if it was archived or deleted. Then while looking through it further, I come to find out that if you delete a message from your inbox, Gmail archives it!?!? Talk about confusing. These hiccups combined with the battery drain took me right back to the tried-and-true GPush and IMAP setup. He said he will definetly be checking out the show. ************** Geek This Week: Aaron: After giving the netbook lots of thought and really thinking what I would do with it, I have decided to pass on purchasing the computer. The two biggest factors are that I wouldn't have a use for it outside of my house (where I have my much more powerful iMac) and also I have an iPhone. My iPhone does everything a netbook does AND it fits in my pocket. I realized I have Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, web, music and tons more on me at all times. Gozer: My little cousin got an xbox with call of duty world at war. Played for about four hours saturday night. Luckily my wife had plans with her friends and she was out late! Got a bit into the multiplayer more. The big problem i had with modern warfare multiplayer was that if i played with friends i couldn't tell where they were. Gears is much easier because it is a smaller scale action game and easier to keep track of where people are. World at War somewhat solves this by recognizing who you are in a party with and will highlight your friends names in people so it's easy to distinguish them from other people you're playing with. Fantastic idea. Still playing Arkham Asylum. Really enjoying the pacing of the game. Switches up the gameplay from detective mode to fighting to stealth. There is an awesome sequence with scarecrow somewhat early on in the game. You have to investigate the morgue and all these voices start talking to you. In surround sound this kinda started to freak me out a little bit. Then the morgue is torn apart into this alternate dimension looking arkham that is floating in space. In the middle of you navigating around is a huge scarecrow searching for you. Awesome wow moements like this really make this game incredible. Tried out some of the challenge modes. Did the stealth mode where you have to k.o. 6 guys secretly. I knocked out 2 guys near the glass floor, then i laced the glass floor with explosive gel. 3 other guys came over to investigate to guys i just knocked out and i was just watching and waiting until they al got onto the glass floor. When they did, i detnated the gel and took out 3 guys at once. Awesome. Rented Halo ODST and Beatles Rock Band. Haven't played it yet. Halo ODST has 4 player coop and you play as just some regular dude instead of master chief. There is also a separate disc for multiplayer and firefight which seems like a more intelligent version of gears 2 horde mode. There is also no teabagging in firefight. ************** Tech and Gaming News: iPod Touch Outsells Zune HD If online sales are any indication, then the Zune HD isn't helping Microsoft close the gap with Apple in the lucrative MP3 music player market. Still netbook shopping. Gozer: Was sick all weekend. COD world at war...actually played the story mode! Really awesome. Did get up to level 28 on nazi zombie mode. Used the pack a punch to power up the ray gun and the magnum. Just got to the point where my wife was yelling, " Are you gonna come up to spend time with me?" I left at 28 and everyone else wound up dying. ( Mahhk will be very happy) Went into blockbuster not expecting any good games for rent. Got Batman Arkum Asylum. The game is beautiful and has one of the best intros ever. I felt like I was on a ride at universal studios. The joker is being taken away in one of these hannibal lectur contraptions. Makin his comments all the while. You meet killer croc his is transported via elevator and he wants to eat your bones. Scary dude. I was thinkin wow i hope that electric collar he's got on works. The environments are gorgeous and the fighting is alot of fun. There's detective mode, ex) batman follows a crooked guard by following the alcohol that he just consumed. Ended my netflix. I just figured i go to blockbuster all the time for my games i mine as well get the blockbuster online so i can return mailed movies to the store and pick up new ones for free. ( i think 5 free in store exchanges) I never really used the streaming netflix so what's the difference between that and blockbuster? at least now i can go to the store and get free movies along with my mailed ones. ************** Tech and Gaming News: Scribblenauts Word Count Higher Than Reported Over the weekend, a hacker seemed to prove that there are exactly 22,802 words in Scribblenauts. Not true, the game's creative director told Fast Company. An online article quotes Jeremiah Slaczka, creative director at game development studio 5th Cell, told the outlet that the the weekend word count report missed some words: "That was leaked by a hacker who does not know anything. It's more than that," Slaczka said. Scribblenauts, which will be out tomorrow on the Nintendo DS, offers players a couple of hundred 2D platforming and puzzle challenges, all of which can be solved using objects, people and creatures that the player writes into the game. The game was programmed to recognize and render as many kid-safe, non-trademarked names as possible. Most proper names were excluded as well. No Batman and no naughty words. Eidos has given official details for the first of two planned free downloadable content packs for Batman: Arkham Asylum. We already knew the one scheduled for this Thursday is titled "Insane Night," but now the reason why is becoming clear. Kotaku reports that it consists of two new maps. "Totally Insane" combat challenge places Batman in the Records Room against scores of the lunatic enemies. The "Nocturnal Predator" map is (simply enough) a predator challenge that seems to take place on the Arkham grounds.
